School superintendent excels in his latest evaluation
FOXBORO - The school committee has given Superintendent Christopher Martes his second straight gold star.
Martes averaged a score of 4.8 on a scale of 1 to 5 on his recent evaluation.
The board rated Martes on five responsibilities and three individual goals.
He said the state sets leadership standards and the school committee and the school leadership team set the goals.
"He constantly looks for ways to improve. He is constantly refining. I don't know what else he can do," school board member Beverley Lord said this week.
Martes said the evaluation reflected the work of his team, staff, teachers and parents.
Martes' top score was 4.8, in both financial management and communications and public relations.
"Dr. Martes has consistently exceeded expectations in preparing and presenting a student-driven school budget and negotiating with administrators and municipal leaders to close town budget shortfalls," one board member wrote.
Martes' lowest score was 4.5 in student achievement.
"Dr. Martes has generally met or exceeded all the time lines established through the Strategic Plan," one board member wrote. "It is still too early to tell how much real improvement there is in student achievement, but early signs are positive."
Martes has gotten outstanding grades both years of his tenure.
The veteran educator was hired in July 2007 after leading the Framingham public schools for four years. He was named Massachusetts Superintendent of the Year for 2008.
Martes' evaluation last year was Foxboro's first public review of a superintendent in almost a decade.
Former nine-year Superintendent Kathleen Tyrell had negotiated a contract that prohibited the board from disclosing her review.
