Donors save summer

North firms pitch in to fund lifeguards
NORTH ATTLEBORO - Lifeguards will be on duty at the Falls Pond beach seven days a week, thanks to a $4,000 donation from the North Attleboro Industrial Park Tenant's Association.

Economic conditions and a tight budget meant the conservation commission only had $10,000 of the $14,000 needed to staff the Barbara Road beach with lifeguards every day. As a result, the commission had planned to staff the beach with lifeguards only five days per week.

However, the tenants' association and individual businesses in the industrial park stepped in with the donation to ensure the beach could be fully staffed.

Selectmen accepted the donation on Thursday.

The beach will be staffed beginning July 1, conservation commission Chairman Cliff Bassett said. The news is not as good for the Whiting's Pond beach, however.

No money was included in the budget for lifeguards there, and another $14,000 would be needed to staff lifeguards on that beach seven days a week.

"We have enough money for lifeguards seven days a week at Falls Pond, but we'll need more money for lifeguards at Whiting's Pond," Bassett said. "Even a small donation will help us. We're trying to have lifeguards there on Saturday and Sunday."

Selectman John Rhyno and his wife, Sherry, made a $1,500 donation toward the cause on Thursday.

Bassett said that if another $2,500 can be raised, there will be enough money to at least staff the beach on weekends.

He thanked both the industrial park businesses and the Rhynos for their support.

" It's prerry easy to criticize John and Sherry Rhyno, when you don't put your name behind the statement. "

" When I was at Falls Pond on Memorial Day I saw on the sign that there was a fee to swim as well as park there. And I saw the same on the sign at Whitings Pond a few days later. I see where they want to make money to staff the beaches, but I think that paying for parking for cars & trailors is ok because only so many cars can be parked there, but if they're going to be charging people to swim, I think only non-residents should be charged. I don't know if it's just me that thinks this "

" It must be really difficult to be filled with such hatred for your fellow man. Good thing no one takes you guys (hardhearted and realist) seriously. "

" Saving Summer?! Oh maybe in December we'll have a headline about the Ryhnos saving Christmas?
True generosity does not need to be brought up in Boards of Selectmen meetings. It can be anonymous. I don't see too many little old ladies in church waving their collection envelopes while yelling "Woo hoo look at me I'm putting $10 in the basket." "

" attlegal -- I haven't seen the print edition yet. Is there the usual photo of the Rhynos with a check? "

" Ahh yes there's electman John Rhyno and his wife, Sherry, giving money. They're running for mayor of NA, so they've got to be on the front page once a week. "

" You can certainly second guess both Mr. Rhyno & Mr. Belham (his company donated as part of the industrial park group)on many of the town issues but you cannot question their generosity.

Thanks to all who donated. "
