Milestone for land preservation

Deed signed to save 100 acres owned by LaSalette Shrine
ATTLEBORO - A deed restriction that preserves more than 100 acres of wetlands and woods off Park Street for passive recreation has been signed, the Massachusetts Audubon Society announced Wednesday.

The establishment of the restriction on land owned by LaSalette Shrine is the culmination of almost two years of work and will add to the city's stock of woodlands that can be enjoyed by the public.

It will be managed as a wildlife sanctuary by Audubon.

The conservation restriction was established with the help of a state grant to the city of $495,000 and matching private donations totaling about $290,000.

Some of the cash will be used to develop trails and create programs on natural history, while the rest will serve as an endowment for the property's management.
LaSalette, the city, Audubon and the Attleboro Land Trust have collaborated on the project since 2007.

The property will be known as the Attleboro Springs Wildlife Sanctuary.

A formal dedication ceremony will be held at some point in the future, an Audubon official said.

The LaSalette property is connected to 360 acres of city-owned land and creates a wide swath of open space in the heart of the city.

The city had to shell out $495,000 up front to establish the endowment fund, while the Land Trust raised the $290,000 match from a variety of charitable groups, including the Attleboro Foundation, Bafflin Foundation, Bristol County Charitable Foundation, Augat Foundation, Fields Pond Foundation, Fred M. Roddy Foundation, George H. and Jane A. Mifflin Memorial Trust, Balfour Foundation, Ottmar Foundation and the Roddy-Holden Foundation.

With the deed restriction in place, the city can recoup the $495,000 from the state and restore the cash to its stabilization fund.
