Norfolk snaps Foxboro's win streak

NORFOLK - It took some defensive wizardry, but the Norfolk Legion baseball team was able to hold off Foxboro on Monday evening at Freeman Centennial Field, winning the District 6 matchup 3-2.

Norfolk jumped on Foxboro ace Joey Swindells, scoring three runs in the first, and held off a late Foxboro rally as Post 93 left the go-ahead runner at second in the top of the seventh.

It was the first loss in eight games for Foxboro, which fell to 7-2 on the season while Norfolk improved to 8-7.

"That's huge, Foxboro has been marching down the field," Norfolk coach Mark Gafur said. "For us to stop them tonight, it was great."

Down 3-2 to start the seventh, Foxboro almost rallied to take the lead if not for the defensive play of Jon Cushman. Billy McGee drew a leadoff walk and Joe Clagg followed with a one-out free pass of his own to put two runners on for Mike Farrell. The Foxboro High product then crushed a pitch from Norfolk's Greg King to deep right, where there is no fence at Freeman Centennial Field. Standing against the high grass which serves as a home run barrier, Cushman reached up and snagged the shot. King followed by getting Jimmy Gilmore to ground to second to end the game.

"My boys played some near flawless baseball, we made some great plays," Gafur said. "If (Cushman) misses that it lands in the high grass for a home run. That was a huge play."

It wasn't the only big defensive play for Post 335. Foxboro, which had just cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth with no outs and two on, sent John Garabedien to the plate. The Mansfield High product hit a screaming grounder up the middle of the field but Alec Palioca made a fantastic diving stop, flipping to second to start a huge double play and keep Foxboro from breaking through.

Norfolk scored all three of its runs in the first inning. Connor Richards smacked an opposite field home run to left field to lead the inning off, Joe Tornabene hit a RBI double and Paul Everett followed with what could have been a two-run single if not for a perfect throw from Foxboro's Joe Clagg, nailing Tornabene at the plate in a bang-bang play, helping Post 93 limit the damage.

"He couldn't get anything down in the zone, it was just one of them days," Foxboro coach Billy Travers said of Swindells, who took the loss. "It happens to a pitcher. I don't care who you are you're going to have them."

Brandon Howard got the win for Norfolk in his first start of the season. The King Philip product held Foxboro scoreless until the fifth, going five plus innings and allowing two runs until getting chased in the sixth.

Norfolk travels to Dedham today while Foxboro travels to Westwood.

North Attleboro 2, Plymouth 1

NORTH ATTLEBORO - With powerhouse Plymouth lining the other dugout, North's players and coaches knew they would need a "Josh Beckett-like performance" from pitcher Kevin Mickienzi. Well, that's exactly what they got. The hurler through a complete-game three-hitter, striking out six in the process.

With the help of inspired defensive play from Ryan Gein, Brandon Cole and David Lange, the pitching performance was just good enough to help squeak out the win.

On offense, North had trouble getting the bats going at times. They only posted four hits, but when they did make contact, they made it count. In the first inning, Eddy Fitzpatrick, who finished with two hits, ripped a triple, sending in Jake Connolly, who reached based on balls.

Eric Perry sent in the, eventual, winning run in the second inning. He doubled to left, sending in Lange. From there, it was all defense and solid pitching.

With the big victory, North (8-3 division, 9-3 overall) are poised to make a run to the postseason. They play Fall River tomorrow.

Norton 4-4, Taunton 3-3

NORTON - Post 222 swept a Sunday double-header from Taunton by identical 4-3 scores.

In Game 1, A.J. Bashaw and Chris Constintine each had two hits and two RBI. Devin Askew scattered six hits over six innings for the win while Tom Mickienzi came on with the two on and no outs in the seventh inning and retired the side on a double-play and a strikeout for the save.

In Game 2, Bashaw went the distance for the win, scattering nine hits and overcoming a three-run first inning by Post 103.

Offensively, Norton pushed across three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Scott Fraatz had an RBI-double and Dakota Rabbitt and Askew added RBI-singles.

Norton 4, Seekonk 1

SEEKONK - Bishop Feehan High product Tom Michienzi pitched a complete-game, three-hitter as Post 222 held down Seekonk Post 311 on Saturday. McKenzie struck out three. Offensively for Norton, Devin Askew went 3-for-3 while A.J. Bashaw drove in three runs.
