Rehoboth police to get chaplain

Selectmen also decide to limit zoning officer's appointment
REHOBOTH - Selectmen approved a request from Police Chief Stephen Enos to allow a chaplain to provide assistance and counseling to the town's police officers.

Enos has worked with police chaplains in the past, and told selectmen that the presence of a clergyman at crime scenes "took a great burden" off the officers.

The Rev. John Amaral serves as the fire department chaplain. Enos asked if Amaral could serve in that capacity for the police department.

Selectman Kevin McBride was supportive, saying having a chaplain on hand to assist police officers was "a great idea."

Also at Monday's meeting, selectmen assigned Building Inspector/Zoning Officer Michael O'Hern to serve a limited specific appointment. O'Hern will finish three ongoing zoning cases, but will not inspect the buildings, said Selectmen Chairman Frederick "Skip" Vadnais.

The board is appealing a case that the zoning board of appeals made a decision on, and is attempting to negotiate a settlement.

Vadnais said the decision was "significantly flawed," and will be overturned by a court.

No information about the case was revealed.

O'Hern's position will be unpaid, and will continue until the three zoning cases are resolved, Vadnais said.
