GOBIS: Prinos hits the court for title

"She has excellent footwork," related Foxboro High coach Rob Zimmer of Prinos' near-flawless play on the court, nurtured by the many hours of coaching from her dad Peter Prinos, currently the USTA-New England's under-45 top-ranked player. Prinos will be attempting to become the area's first singles champion. Not former Foxboro great Agatha Poraj-Kozminski, not former Mansfield great Jana Liscovkova, not even any of the many greats in the stable of Bishop Feehan Shamrocks - Diane Ison, Kristin Brooks, Katie Stammen, Paula Silva, Danielle Rautenberg - advanced to the MIAA Final Four. "She's strictly business out there," added Zimmer of Prinos, who puts pressure on her opponents immediately because of her high percentage of successful first serves - not to mention strong shots from both sides. "The strokes are only as good as the position you get yourself into," said the Warrior mentor of her footwork and athletic skill ... ** When North Attleboro High senior and the Rocketeers' shattered the school record, it erased a 29-year old mark set in 1980 by the New England Championship Meet silver medal winning team (3:24) of Mike and Jerry Espinosa, Vin Brennan and Steve Burns ... ** Rocketeer runners supreme received the "Athletic Cup" signifying them as the outstanding senior student-athletes at North Attleboro High School. In addition, trackster and field hockey-swim-lacrosse participant Shannon Moore received the Dr. Grant and Dr. DeYoung awards ... ** "They were burnt out, they were done," explained Norton High track coach of several of his Lancer boys runners, who finished well behind expectations at the MIAA State Meet. "We double and triple up, so some of these kids have run 30-40 races and it took a toll" ... ** Attleboro High runners Chris Gulino (hamstring) and Kyle Dragun (foot) were slowed but still finished in the top 20 in the 200 and 400 sprints respectively at the MIAA Meet, "a good job," nonetheless praised Bombardier coach Kevin Deschenes ... ** Former King Philip High great Allie Cuozzo and the Union women's lacrosse team went into the NCAA Division III Tournament ranked No. 6 nationally. Cuozzo was a three-sport captain this year as a junior and returned last week from an NCAA leadership conference in Orlando. With the Dutchmen lacrosse team, the midfielder was a first team All Liberty League selection, an IWLCA Empire Region (upstate New York) first team pick and an ECAC Division III first team all-star selection. She finished the season with 26 goals and seven assists, grabbed 61 ground ball and forced 32 turnovers. As such, Womens Lacrosse.com honored her with the Unsung Hero of the Year for Div. III Women's Lacrosse ... ** Glen Conlon's MIAA Division 2 South Tournament finalist Foxboro High baseball team generated a "champion's salute and courtesy" with the Foxboro Police Dept. having a two motorcycle brigade usher the Warriors to and from Braintree High ... ** The Attleboro High football team will be out on the streets en masse Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon, canvassing neighborhoods to offer the purchase of Bombardier "gold" cards, which offer discount prices from various city merchants. Proceeds help defray expenses for the trip to summer camp ... ** At the Mass. Open Golf Tournament qualifying round at the Foxborough CC, former New York Ranger and New Jersey Devil goalie Mike Dunham was the medalist with a 1-under-par 71. Foxboro's Chris Congdon took third place at 75, while a shot behind at 76 was three-time AAGA Tournament champion Billy Vine. The reigning AAGA Open titlist Ryan Riley shot a 78 and is an alternate ... ** Due to graduation exercises at Dighton-Rehoboth High, Falcon senior Ashley Noons, seeded third in the shot put and fifth with the discus, will be bypassing the New England Championship Meet Saturday ... ** Bob Goldberg, the King Philip High girls' tennis coach, was amazed at the resiliency of his Warriors after losing the MIAA Division 1 South title match to Wellesley. "The scouting report that (KP boys' coach) Laurie Puddester was right on the money, position for position and I still think that we could have won. The girls themselves, win or lose, 10 minutes later it's out of their heads - a boys' team would let that (loss) linger" ... ** The Attleboro Area Golf Association will sponsor its annual junior clinic Saturday, June 20 at the Highland Country Club in Attleboro. The free clinic is open to boys and girls of all ages and of all levels of abilities, from beginner through intermediate players. The clinic will run from 10 a.m. until noon under the direction of Highland CC pro Drew Chapman. Clubs will be provided for those without a set. Following the session a luncheon will be served. ** The North Attleboro High girls' MIAA state championship 4x100 relay team (a school, state and meet record 47.9 seconds)of senior captains Lauren Goldberg and Julianne Cappadona, senior Carolyn Udall and junior Christy Deininger will be the No. 2 seed, second only to Hartford's Weaver High (47.85).
