How do I respond to racist comments?

Q: I go to a private catholic school. All of my friends are white and I have always talked like them. When I get home people pick on me and tease me and call me white girl, but I am black. What do I do?

A: This sounds very hard to deal with but you are not alone. Racist comments are common and are a kind of bullying. Best to ignore them!

Bullies are often just jealous and trying to see what you will do. So be calm, don't answer them, and stay confident. There's other helpful advice on TeenGrowth and also on this website: http://kidshealth.org/teen/your - mind/problems/bullies.html

If problems persist, it is wise to talk with teachers and parents. School or neighborhood-based anti-bullying programs can be very helpful and it sounds as if your area needs one. We understand this is happening when you get home and not at school but there may be a community center or youth organization that's a good resource. Maybe you could help get a program started although it will take lots of courage and bravery!
