SMARTS accepting summer registration


ATTLEBORO - Registration is now being accepted for the 2009 SMARTS Summer Institute. The program provides students with an opportunity to study creative writing, dance, drama, film/video, instrumental, strings, vocal, and visual arts at three levels.

The elementary program is for students in kindergarten to grades 3 and runs from July 6 to July 24. The junior program is for students in grades 3 to 8 and runs from July 6 to July 31. The senior drama and film program is for students in grades 7 to 12 and runs July 6 to July 31, and the senior dance and instrumental program runs from July 6 to July 17.

All programs are held Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Brennan Middle School. Before and after care is available.

The SMARTS Summer Institute emphasizes the importance of process rather then product. The theme this summer is "Anything Is Possible."

ATTLEBORO - The area SEMA Parkinson's support group will meet at the Community VNA, 10 Emory St., Attleboro on Wednesday, July 8 at 10 a.m.

LaSalette Shrine to hold yard sale

ATTLEBORO - The National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette, located at 947 Park St. will hold another flea market/yard sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 11 in the shrine cafeteria. The public is invited to attend.

La Salette Shrine would like to thank everyone who donated all of the items for the sale, which include some new items as well as gently used furniture, books, gifts, collectible and other items.

AHS Class of 1970 to reunite July 11

ATTLEBORO - Attleboro High School's Class of 1970 will hold a reunion on Saturday, July 11 from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Locust Valley Golf Course clubhouse, 106 Locust St., Attleboro.

Round Robin hoop tourney set at church

ATTLEBORO - A 3-on-3 Round Robin Basketball Tournament will be held at All Saints Anglican Church, 1188 South Main St. (Route 152) at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 18. Teams will include students in high school. In case of bad weather, the organizers will determine a rain date.

Snacks will be sold and Foot Locker gift cards will be given to players of the top three teams. All players will be required to present an application signed by a parent or guardian at least one week before the day of the tournament.

A nonrefundable $5 entry fee per player must accompany each application. All rules will be distributed and-or posted before the tournament.

You do not have to be a member of the church to play in the tournament. Chairing this event is youth group leader Ben Giuffrida, who and can be reached by leaving a message at the church office at 508-222-2640.

All Saints Anglican offers study courses

ATTLEBORO - The Rev. Lance Giuffrida, the rector of All Saints Anglican Church in Attleboro, is offering summer courses of study. The classes are basic enough for everyone, and solid enough for those who want to go beyond the basics.

"Crash Course on the Bible" has begun. It will be held Saturdays at 4:30 p.m. until July 18; Sundays at 9 a.m. until July 19; and Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. from July 29 to Sept. 2.

"Theology 101" will also be held three times: Saturdays at 4:30 p.m. from July 25 to Aug. 29; Sundays at 9 a.m. from July 26 to Aug. 30; and Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. until July 22.

AHS Class of '89 finalizes reunion

ATTLEBORO - The Attleboro High School Class of 1989 will hold its 20th year reunion from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday, July 25 at the Hi Hat, 3 Davol Square, Providence.

Organizers are asking those interested in attending to RSVP by June 19. The cost is $50 per person, due by June 26. That price includes appetizers, dinner and dessert, as well as live entertainment and dancing and free valet parking.

Women's Guild plans fair in South Attleboro

ATTLEBORO - St. Theresa's Women's Guild of South Attleboro will holding its annual indoor craft and vendor fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13. This year, the fair will be held at the South Attleboro Knights of Columbus Hall on 304 Highland Avenue (Route 123), which is air-conditioned and handicapped accessible.

An 8-foot table and two chairs will be provided to crafters for a $30 fee. There will be an admission donation of 50 cents to the public with hourly door prizes.

A penny social and a bake table will also be available and the kitchen will be open for lunch.

AHS Class of 1999 makes plans to reunite

ATTLEBORO - The Attleboro High School Class of 1999 will hold its 10th reunion on Saturday, Nov. 28. Invitations will go out potentially at mid-summer, according to Lauren Bliss, reunion coordinator. Bliss says the reunion will be held at Olive's Restaurant and Martini Bar, 108 North Main St., Providence from 6 to 9 p.m. Classmates are encouraged to stay past 9 p.m., when the bar opens to the public and a cover band plays.

Finger foods, pizzas, chicken tenders, fried calamari, coconut shrimp, and a crudite table will be available along with a cash bar. ATTLEBORO - Local residents can share their time and talents to help make a difference in the community by participating in the "Days of Caring."

The program allows local non-profit agencies to use resources more effectively and serve clients more efficiently by calling on volunteers in the community to help with various projects that need to be completed such as landscaping, construction, clean-ups, painting, and many more. Lions help library get large print books


ATTLEBORO - The South Attleboro Village Lions Club, under the guidance of project chairwoman Bev Leedham, is continuing its tradition of providing large print books to the Attleboro Public Library. This year already, the club has donated several books, with more on order.

Since 1989, the Village Lions have donated more than 300 large print books to the library in order to help those with vision impairments. Working hand in hand with the library, Leedham gets a list of books the library would like to have in large print, and looks to find these books through her source, the Doubleday Book Club.

Depression support group meets weekly

ATTLEBORO - DBSA (Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance) meets every Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hillside Adult Day Health Center at 50 Walton St., Attleboro.

The group is a peer led support group for people suffering with depression or who are bipolar, and is a chapter of a national organization. For more information, go to www.dbsa-attleboro.org.

Membership is free for people who are bipolar or suffer from depression. It is suggested that first timers arrive at 6:45 p.m. on the night of the meeting to review how the group works.

Legion, Lions resume their meat raffles

ATTLEBORO - The South Attleboro Lions and South Attleboro American Legion Post 312 will hold this year's meat raffles from 2:30 to 4 p.m. every Saturday at Post 312 on Newport Avenue. There will be a large selection of meat, as well as one raffle of lobster, fish, and steamers. Proceeds go to Legion and Lions scholarship funds.

ATTLEBORO - New Hope, the local domestic violence and sexual assault agency, is looking for dedicated and compassionate volunteers to join its Rape Crisis Advocate Team.

As part of the on call response team, rape crisis advocates meet survivors at hospitals and police stations and provide crisis intervention, support and referrals.
