'Reading Makes Cents' this summer




Rockland Trust is starting a summer reading program for children called Reading Makes Cents on June 29, where students entering grades 1 through 8 in the fall can earn $2.50 in a savings account for each book that they read, up to a maximum of 10 books. Students who read at least four books will also earn an invitation to an end-of-summer ice cream party.

Congrats, scholars Companies and groups in the area recently presented these scholarships to students:

Alicia Bourdeau of Attleboro High School, Emily Zimmer of North Attleboro High School, Sarah Merrifield of Mansfield High School, Mackenzie Hardman of Seekonk High, Devin Askew of Norton High School, Kasey Doolan of Foxboro High School and David Getchell of Norfolk were each recently presented with a $250 Honey Dew Donuts scholarship by Plainville company founder and President Richard Bowen at the seventh annual Honey Dew Donuts Scholarship Breakfast.

Matthew Brawley of Rehoboth was recently awarded a scholarship from Wave Federal Credit Union in Warwick, R.I, presented by Wave President and CEO Paul Archambault, who is also a Rehoboth resident.

The Women's Success Network recently presented 17 scholarships worth $11,000 to non-traditional women learners in the area who are obtaining or advancing skills through college or professional development courses.

Get safety travel information

The New England Patriots, Foxboro police and state police from the New England states and New York will promote safe summer vacation travel through a "Summer Safety Blitz" event at Patriot Place in Foxboro from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 30. State police will talk to the public about safe travel in advance of the July 4 holiday and the summer vacation season. State police helicopters from different departments as well as state police cruisers, motorcycles and mobile breath alcohol testing vehicles will be displayed on Patriot Place Plaza and in the parking lots for visitors to view and explore. The event will kick off with a state police officer discussing child seat safety and reading to children at 10:30 a.m. at CBS Scene.

Credit and jobs meeting topic

American Credit Counseling Service, Inc. will continue its series of free monthly financial education workshops from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 30 at its education center at 4 Taunton St., Suite 5 in Plainville. This month's workshop is entitled "Has Your Credit Cost You a Job?" Topics of discussion will include the five steps to become credit-worthy again, which will improve your chances of finding new employment.

Shields Radiation Oncology Center in Mansfield, a joint venture partnership with Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro and Morton Hospital and Medical Center in Taunton, is now in its second year of operation. Growth of the center over the past two years has included an expansion of the prostate cancer brachytherapy seed program at Sturdy and a new prostate program at Morton.

The clothing store Express is the latest addition to Patriot Place in Foxboro.

Wrentham native Tom Wunderlich has been appointed vice president of business development for Burlington-based Airwide Solutions.

Panera Bread in Plainville recently presented a check for $4,550.79 to its Operation Dough-Nation partner, the Ryan's Hope Foundation, also based in Plainville. Cash donations made by customers were increased through various matching programs by Panera.

Morton Hospital and Medical Center will host its 18th Annual Golf Tournament on Aug. 17, at Segregansett Country Club in Taunton. The tournament will kick off with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start.
