GUEST COLUMN: Changes in SERVE
By Kathy Jaaskelainen
Thank you for your editorial on May 29 concerning the SERVE New England food co-op. SERVE has been active in North Attleboro since the early 1990's. Located at Sacred Heart we have "satellite" sites at Circle Court, 22 North Washington and Elm Terrace to make food delivery easier for senior participants.
In addition to our family meal package (enough meat, vegetables, and fruit to feed four meals to a family of four), we have a meat-only package for $16 and offer three specials which change each month. All packages change monthly, except for the "staples" of the family package: potatoes, onions and carrots. Starting in July a new package will be offered which will make mealtime even more convenient for our busy families and single participants. Two boxes of seven assorted meals will be offered for $18 each, $2.57 per meal! Making these meals even better are that the sauces and gravies are low sodium and low fat!
As noted in your editorial, each participant volunteers a minimum of two hours during the month. Our participants volunteer in diversed ways. They knit caps for newborns and cancer patients, volunteer at their children's school, drive neighbors to appointments and errands, take in mail for neighbors on vacation, babysit for friends, at their church, at senior centers, help sort food from the warehouse and many more places. Some volunteer many more hours in many different ways.
My family has participated in SERVE for more than 14 years and have been pleased with the quality and assortment of food. We purchase the majority of meats through the program. Last night we enjoyed sweet Italian sausage on the grill along with grilled onions and coleslaw which were all in the family meal this week!
Orders can be placed by calling a local coordinator or online at www.servenewengland.org (payment by credit card or debit card only).
