FLANAGAN: Thoughts between the drops

With his directive for Attleboro firefighters to stop mowing the grass at the South Attleboro station, and the recreation department to take over the job, reported last weekend, Kevin Dumas has etched his name into the history books: He's the first mayor to ask firefighters to do LESS work.

So what's with all the rain? Yeah, I know this is New England, where the weather is famous for its, er, irregularities, but this is a bit much. There has to be some kind of conspiracy theory at play. Is the U.S. Treasury up to date on the vigorish payments to the Chinese? This has been water torture on a mass scale.

To be sure, I wouldn't earn one if I were somehow whisked back to high school - kicking and screaming all the way, I can tell you - but why don't more schools offer academic letters? Are good grades not sexy enough to impel a booster club to raise money for jackets?

Today's quiz: Neither the president nor anyone of stature in House or Senate is showing any inclination to champion the cause of marijuana legalization. Still, the rumor that such could be forthcoming as one answer to the nation's revenue shortage won't quit. Our opinion page e-mail box has been receiving unsolicited columns on the issue at a fairly regularly clip.

On the off chance that marijuana were legalized, which member of the Forbes list of the world's richest people would be most upset about it? Bonus question: Where does he rank on the list?

Word play: Here's another word, akin to "unabashed," cited in an earlier column, where the negative form is common, but the positive isn't: Unrequited.

I don't want to hear anything about unrequited love; loves are unrequited as frequently as sparrows fall. But if you've ever had requited love, or ever had occasion to use the word "requited" in a sentence, drop me a note via the contact information listed at the end.

What's the Chinese word for vigorish? Just curious.

Memo to: Frederick "Fritz" Henderson, formerly of Norfolk, recently named CEO of General Motors:

Get your top people excited about building a simple inexpensive, but environmentally acceptable car, as Ford did with Models A and T (promote it with a paraphrase of Henry's famous promise, "you can have any color you want, so long as it's green") Volkswagen did with the Beetle, Citroen with the 2CV, Chrysler with the Kcar. Don't call it an Edsel.

Memo to: The folks at Chrysler.

How are you guys saving money by yanking the franchise of Motor Mart, where I bought my last three cars, and my son added a truck purchase, and Tarbox? Might I assume you've identified your problem as "too many customers?"

Quiz answer: Joaquin Guzman Loera. The head of Mexico's Sinaloa drug cartel would take a big income loss if marijuana were legalized.

Bonus answer: While the United States government has a $5 million bounty on Loera's head, Forbes ranks him at No. 701 on the list of the richest, estimating his net worth at $1 billion.
