Barbara Jean Phinney, 73

ATTLEBORO - Barbara Jean (York) Phinney, 73, of George Street, formerly of Maple Terrace, Attleboro, died on Monday, June 1, 2009 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro following a period of declining health.

She was the wife of the late Norman Elmer Phinney, Sr. who died on June 16, 1981.

Born in Norwood, Massachusetts on December 6, 1935, she was a daughter of the late Stanley and Velma (Reeves) York.

She resided in the City of Attleboro for most of her life.

Mrs. Phinney was a member of the Bethany Village Fellowship in South Attleboro.

Prior to her retirement she was employed as an assembler for the Augat Company and Foster Metals, both in Attleboro.

She was a fan of Elvis Presley and enjoyed creating crafts and sewing.

Mrs. Phinney was an ardent bowler as part of the North Attleboro Bowling League and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan.

She was the mother of Sheila A. Phinney of South Attleboro; Norman E. Phinney, Jr. of Attleboro; Brian W. Phinney of Attleboro and Michael J. Phinney of Corinth, Vermont; nine grandchildren; one great granddaughter; her siblings: Richard York of Brockton; Edith Kjersgard of Brockton; Shirley Cadwallader of Boise, Idaho; Christine Zaniboni of Mansfield; Charles York of Mansfield and Bradford York of Mansfield and several nieces, nephews and extended family members.

She was the mother of the late Robin Marie (Phinney) Burns, who died on February 21, 2007, and was the sister of the late Allen York and Mary Johnson.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2009 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, 3/4 mile on left), Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro.

A Funeral Service will follow visitation on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 4 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, 3/4 mile on left), Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro.

Burial will be private in Mount Hope Cemetery and Arboretum, North Attleboro.

A children's room is available during visitation and funeral service.

Margaret E. Caruso, 98

FRANKLIN - Margaret E. (Spera) Caruso of Franklin, where she has lived for two years, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at the Maples Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Wrentham. She was 98.

Born in Ironwood, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late John and Ernestine (Castagna) Spera, and was educated in Catholic schools in Michigan.

Formerly of Newton, she had also lived in Medfield for 20 years and Marstons Mills for 10 years.

A true family woman, she was devoted to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

A fabulous cook, she could combine the simplest ingredients into a spectacular meal.

She enjoyed her annual trips back to Capistrano, Italy with her husband to visit her family village.

She was the loving wife of 74 years to Gildo R. Caruso, who passed in 2001, and the mother of Alfonse J. Caruso of Medfield, John D. Caruso of Burlington, Gildo R. Caruso Jr. of Middleton, Roger P. Caruso of Medfield, Phyllis A. Gamble of Wrentham, and Lynda M. Embree of Franklin; and the sister of Flora Cormier of Franklin, and the late Lena Maguire, John Spera, and Attilio Spera. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 140 South St., Wrentham, followed by burial in Newton Cemetery.

Visiting hours at the R. J. Ross Funeral Home, 135 South St., Route 1A, Wrentham, will be on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.

Walter G. Jackson, 88

FRANKLIN - Walter G. Jackson, 88, of Franklin died June 1 in his home following a long illness.9 He was the husband of the late Mary F. (Picard) Jackson who died in 2002.

Born in Nashua, N.H. on October 6, 1920 the son of the late Walter and Stella (Janusefski) Jatkiewicz, Mr. Jackson was raised in Nashua and had lived in Franklin since 1954.

Mr. Jackson attended Riverside Jr. College in California and was a graduate of the Boston School of Anatomy and Embalming.

A funeral director, Mr. Jackson began his career working for the Davis Funeral Home in Nashua, then the Graham Funeral Service in Worcester, Mann & Mann Funeral Home of Boston and P.E. Murray Funeral Home in Boston.

In 1954, Mr. Jackson opened his own funeral home in Franklin which he operated until he sold the business to the Ginley Funeral Home of Franklin.

He continued to help area funeral homes for several years after that.

Mr. Jackson had been a member of the Franklin Board of Health from 1978-1992 and was chairman from 1985-1992. He was named to the executive committee of the Massachusetts Association of Health Boards on which he served for several years.

He was also long active with the Franklin Cemetery Association where he was instrumental in getting the Union Street Cemetery back in "working order" after years of neglect.

He also helped oversee the City Mills Cemetery in Franklin for many years.

Mr. Jackson was long active in many Franklin groups throughout the years.

He was a scoutmaster of Troop 99 in Franklin, director of Men's Residences at Dean Jr. College, member of the Franklin Industrial Commission, chairman of the Franklin Citizens Advisory Committee, member of the Franklin Bicentennial Committee, a member and donor of the Franklin Time Capsule Committee, treasurer of the Franklin chapter of the American Red Cross, member of the Franklin War Veterans Committee, member of the water task force, board of trustees of the American Cancer Society, Attleboro region, member of the Franklin Rotary Club from 1954-1992 and was its president in 1962-63 and a Paul Harris Fellow.

He was a member of the Franklin Charter Commission.

He was also a life member of the Franklin Rod and Gun Club, charter member of the Franklin Lodge of Elks, life member of the American Legion, life member of the Franklin Knights of Columbus and also a Fourth Degree Knight, a member of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Franklin Elders, member of the Franklin Conservation Commission and was a Notary Public.

Mr. Jackson served in the Army during World War II, attaining the rank of sergeant.

For many, Mr. Jackson will be remembered with respect for being there at times when a loved one had died with his dignity and compassion, helping those he could, to get them through their hardest times.

He is survived by his daughter Beth E. Jackson of Plainville, his son Walter E. Jackson of Janesville, Wisc. and his grandchildren Heather L. Jackson of Ontario, Canada and grandson Adam J. Jackson of Roxbury, Vt.

His funeral will be held on Saturday, June 6 from the Ginley Funeral Home of Franklin (www.gileyfuneralhomes.com) 131 Main St. Franklin at 11:15 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church at noon. Burial will be in Union Street Cemetery.

Calling hours will be on Friday from 3 to 7 p.m.

Ruby A. Eddleston, 94

NORTON - Ruby A. (Scott) Eddleston, 94, a lifelong resident of Norton passed away peacefully on Monday, June 1, 2009 at her home in Norton.

She was the beloved wife of the late Robert N. Eddleston who died on May 1, 1981.

Born in Norton, MA on February 25, 1915 she was a devoted daughter of the late Hugh and Elizabeth (Bryson) Scott.

Ruby grew up in Norton and was a 1933 graduate of Norton High School. After marrying Mr. Eddleston she started her own family to which she served as a dedicated homemaker.

A lifelong member of the Trinitarian Congregational Church in Norton, Mrs. Eddleston looked forward to baking for annual church function where her baked goods were always a favorite. She loved gardening and tending to her beautiful flower gardens.

She also enjoyed playing the piano, but most of all spending time with her four generations of loving family members was the essence of Ruby's life.

She is survived by her loving children Robert S. Eddleston, Sr. and his wife Janice of Norton and Elizabeth A. Precourt and her husband Bud of Norton. She was the dear sister of Ruth M. Scott of Norton and the late Anne Dillon, John Scott, Hugh Scott, Andrew Scott, Malcolm Scott and Roy Scott. Mrs. Eddleston is also survived by her cherished 8 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandsons and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services and burial will be held privately at the convenience of her family.

Richard M. Colwell, 76

PLAINVILLE - Richard M. Colwell of Plainville, where he has lived for 18 years, died Monday, June 1, 2009 at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston following a long illness.

He was 76.

Born in Malden, he was the son of the late Hovey and Kittie J. (Mason) Colwell and was a graduate of Whitman High School and Babson College.

He retired as the vice president of marketing for Rockland Trust in Rockland, where he had worked for over 30 years.

A 50-year member of Puritan Lodge AF & AM in Whitman, he was also a member of the Valley of Boston, Scottish Rite Bodies, and Aleppo Temple, Shriners in Willmington.

He mentored children in cribbage and chess at the Wood School in Plainville and spent some of his happiest times in Rangeley Lake, Maine.

He was also a U.S. Marine Corps, Korea, veteran.

The loving husband of 17 years to Nancy (Hemmingsen) Loew-Colwell, he was the father of Lynne M. Trefler-Wright and her husband Richard of Fairport, NY, Bryan W. Colwell and his wife Heather of Needham, and Nicole D. Swartz and her husband Paul of Lakeville; and the step-father of Beverly E. Loew of Arlington, VA, Linn L. Loew-Caprarella and her husband James of Plainville, and Ellen Loew-Campana and her husband Michael of Yorktown Heights, NY.

He is also survived by 11 grandchildren.

Visiting hours at the R J. Ross Funeral Home, 135 South St. Wrentham, will be on Saturday, June 6, 2009 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. Burial will be held at a later date, convenient to the family.

Brian Andrew Swanson, 34

PROVIDENCE - Brian Andrew Swanson, age 34, died unexpectedly in Providence on Monday June 1, 2009. Brian was the son of Bruce A. and the late Martha (Gioiosa) Swanson of Mansfield.

Brian was formerly of Mansfield and moved to Providence two years ago.

He was born in Brockton on February 10, 1975. He graduated from Mansfield High School with the Class of 1993 and received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1997.

He was employed as a mechanical engineer for Inverness Corporation of Attleboro, a division of A. Cookson Company.

Brian's hobbies included body building and science fiction. He also was a car enthusiast.

Besides his father Bruce, he is survived by his twin brother Craig A. Swanson of Newport, his maternal grandmother Jane Gioiosa of Easton, his aunts Mary Gioiosa of Brighton, Nancy Gioiosa of FL and Helen Zinter of Hull, MA and uncles James Crone of Brockton and Richard White of FL.

Roger A. Dufresne

WRENTHAM - Roger A. Dufresne of Wrentham died suddenly, Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at Caritas Norwood Hospital. He was 69.

Born in Acushnet, MA, he was the son of the late Albert L. and Beatrice (Gagne) Dufresne, and was a graduate of North Attleboro High School.

He worked as an electrician for the I.B.E.W. Local 103 in Boston for 20 years. He became a licensed electrician after receiving his training through the I.B.E.W. Juniorman Electrician School.

He also had his license as an oil burner technician and mechanic.

A jack of all trades, he enjoyed his workshop and carpentry, and proved there was little he could not fix. He also enjoyed drawing. An avid reader, he loved his yard and garden, which he called "Magic Land."

After a hard day working in the city, his yard and garden was his oasis.

He was a member of the Franklin Rod & Gun Club and a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Cuban Missile Crisis and Guantanamo Bay.

The husband of Roberta M. (Sullivan) Dufresne, he was the father of Jean M. Hanlon and her husband William of Norton, and Christine A. LeToll of Newington, CT. The brother of Patricia Belisle of East Falmouth, he was also the grandfather of Nicholas and Sean Hanlon, Zachary, Rachel, Daniel, Nathan and Caleb LeToll, and his first born granddaughter, the late Sarah E. LeToll.

He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and sisters- and brothers-in-law.
