Mildred G. "Nana" McHoul, 92

NORTH ATTLEBORO - Mildred G. "Nana" McHoul, 92, a longtime resident of Dorchester, passed away Thursday, June 4, 2009 at home. She was the beloved wife of Alexander F. McHoul for over 72 years, marrying on April 23, 1937.

Born Nov. 12, 1916 in Boston, she was a daughter of the late Maurice and Annie (Holt) Hennessy. Mildred lived nearly all her life in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston before moving to North Attleboro three years ago.

For many years, she and her husband owned and operated McHoul Funeral Home in Dorchester, where Mildred worked answering phones and bookkeeping. She and her husband have inspired several generations of funeral directors who have followed in Alexander's footsteps, including all three sons, two daughters-in-law, three grandchildren and two grandsons-in-law, who are all licensed funeral directors in Massachusetts and New York.

Mildred loved spending time with her family and for many years she enjoyed spending time at her family's beach house in the Hough's Neck section of Quincy. She was affectionately known as "Nana" for over 40 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons: Douglas A. McHoul and his wife Marikay of Hopewell Junction, N.Y. and Vieques, P.R., and Donald A. McHoul and his wife Barbara of Cumberland, R.I.; a devoted daughter-in-law, Anne McHoul of Plymouth; 13 grandchildren: Lori Cassidy, Bonnie Wiegard, Heather Sulca, Mary Ann Menuau, Douglas McHoul, Kary McHoul, Kelly Doyle, Deana McHoul-Welter, Reid McHoul, Austin McHoul, Christina Dearmon, Jamie O'Hanlon and Clinton McHoul; 36 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was mother of the late David A. McHoul, who passed away June 6, 2005 and sister of the late Maurice Hennessy, Edmund Hennessy, Dorothy Rollins and Rita Somers.

Visiting hours will be held today, Sunday, June 7 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the McHoul Funeral Home, 354 Adams St., Dorchester.

A funeral will be held from the funeral home on Monday, June 8 at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass in St. Ambrose Church, Adams Street at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.

Rita E. Clegg, 91

NORTH ATTLEBORO - Rita E. Clegg, 91, of 85 North Washington St., North Attleboro, formerly of Plainville, passed away June 4, 2009 in the Madonna Manor Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Edward Clegg.

Born in Attleboro, MA on March 26, 1918, she was the daughter of the late William and Blanche (Cournoyer) Audette.

Rita was educated in St. Joseph's School and was a graduate of Attleboro High School. She worked for over 30 years at the Homer Alden Company as a stitcher and foreman. Rita was a member of the Degree of Pocahontas and loved sewing, cooking, arts and crafts, and crocheting.

Rita is survived by two sons; Eugene Clegg of Hyde Park, Boston, William Clegg of Plainville, and a daughter; Rita Fleuette of Plainville.

She was the sister of the late Raymond Audette, Lillian Audette, and Lucille DiFiore.

A funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at 9 a.m. from the John J. Diamond Funeral Home, 180 North Washington Street, North Attleboro. Followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in Saint Martha's Church, South Street, Plainville. Visiting hours will be held in the funeral home Monday evening, 4-7 p.m. Burial will be private. Eleanor S. Thomas, 87

NORTON - Eleanor (Shuttleworth) Thomas, 87, of Norton passed away on Sunday May 31, 2009 at the Golden Living Center-Garden Place in Attleboro. She was the beloved wife of the late Elton K. Thomas who died in 1960.

Born in the Saylesville section of Lincoln, Rhode Island on March 15, 1922, she was a dear daughter of the late Frank and Ruth A. (Garner) Shuttleworth.

Eleanor grew up in Lincoln and was educated in Pawtucket schools. Following graduation she furthered her studies to become a graduate of Lesley College in Boston. Mrs. Thomas was a retired Librarian and had worked for over 15 years at the L.G. Nourse Elementary School in Norton prior to retiring.

Her main stay was her faith in the Lord and she was an active member of the Trinitarian Congregational Church in Norton for over 60 years. She served as a Sunday School Superintendent, sang in the church choir, when needed served as a substitute organist, directed the Junior Choir and played in the hand bell choir for many years. She was active in the Prayer Shawl Ministry and was a member of the Ratcliffe Guild, the Whats-So-Ever Club and the Lunch Bunch.

In the 1960's, following the tragic death of her husband and son, she was very instrumental in a major renovation project at the church. She helped oversee the addition of Sunday school classrooms, the church parlor and fellowship hall, complete with a kitchen. "Sweet Hall" was attached to its original building to where it stands today.

A resident of Norton for over 60 years, Eleanor enjoyed painting, tole painting being her favorite. She was also an avid knitter, enjoyed playing and teaching piano and playing the accordion. Mrs. Thomas was a former Girl Scout leader and led many Norton girls from the starting point of a Brownie to becoming a full-fledged senior Girl Scout. She loved children and had donated over 200 hand made baby booties and hats for newborns at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. Her proudest accomplishments were the ways in which she raised her devoted sons as a single mother and reaching out and helping other children in many different ways.

She is survived her loving sons Andrew K. Thomas and his wife Catherine of Winter Garden, Florida, Timothy A. Thomas and his wife Joyce of Creedmoor, North Carolina, Stephen P. Thomas and his wife Barbara of Norton and the late Peter K. Thomas, who passed away in 1960. She was the sister of the late Edith Bruce and is also survived by her cherished 6 grandchildren.

Memorial services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Sunday June 28th at 9:30 a.m. in the Trinitarian Congregational Church, East Main and Pine Streets, Norton. Burial will be held privately at the Norton Center Cemetery in Norton.

Visiting hours have been omitted and Eleanor's family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations in her memory be hade to the Trinitarian Congregational Church Memorial Fund P.O. Box 2068 Norton, MA 02766.

Gerald F. Kelly Sr., 72

WRENTHAM - Gerald F. Kelly Sr., of Wrentham, where he has lived since 1965, died Thursday, June 4, 2009 at the Milford Regional Medical Center in Milford. He was 72.

Born in Boston, he was the son of the late William A. and Josephine (Fay) Kelly, and was a 1956 graduate of Mission Hill High School. He also attended Bentley College, studied accounting.

He retired in 2003 from the MBTA, where he had worked as an electrician since 1978. He was a member of the I.B.E.W. Local 103 in Boston since 1962. An avid golfer, he enjoyed bowling and traveling with his wife to Aruba. He was an active member of NORCAP, in Norwood, Red Sox Nation, and was known as a fabulous cook and baker. Formerly of Boston he had summered on Lake Pearl, prior to eventually moving to Wrentham.

Loving husband of almost 49 years to Theresa B. (Calnen) Kelly, he was the father of Suzanne M. (Kelly) DeFina and her husband John of Mansfield, Stacey-Anne Kelly of Franklin, Stephanie J. Kelly of Wrentham, Kathleen S. Kelly of Franklin, Gerald F. Kelly Jr. and his wife Marcy of Walpole, Paula T. Kelly of Mansfield, and Jill-Anne Kelly of Wrentham. Brother of David Kelly and his wife Rosemary of Methuen, Nancy Melia of Quincy, William Kelly, and the late Charles Kelly. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Samantha Grace, Nicholaus D., Faithe J., Katherine M, John M., Shaylyn, Donovan, and Victoria. The family would like to express sincere thanks to Dr. Kaufman and Erika Barrett at the Mass General Hospital, Oncology Department, and the nurses and Doctors in Tele 2 at the Milford Regional Hospital.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 140 South St., Wrentham.

Visiting hours at the R. J. Ross Funeral Home, 135 South St., Route 1A, Wrentham, will be on Monday evening from 4-8 p.m. Relatives and friends, respectfully invited. Burial will be in Centre Cemetery, Wrentham.
