Evans, 84 NORFOLK - John W. Evans, 84, of Needham Street, Norfolk, died on Thursday, June 18, 2009 in the Thomas Upham House in Medfield. He was the beloved husband of Barbara (Stone) Evans. Born in Natick on June 22, 1924, he was a son of the late Clarence and Lillian (Fletcher) Evans. Raised in Norfolk, he was a 1942 graduate of Walpole High School. Shortly after graduating, John enlisted in the Massachusetts State Guard, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy soon thereafter. A World War II U.S. Navy Veteran, he was discharged on July 13, 1945. He was a graduate of Boston University, having received his bachelor's degree in business administration in 1951. For many years and until his retirement in 1989, he worked as a comptroller for Keystone Custodial Funds in Boston. He was a lifelong Norfolk resident, except for a brief time spent in Greenfield, Mass. Active in local affairs, John had served the Town of Norfolk on the Council on Aging and was one of those instrumental in acquiring the land for, and in the building of, the Norfolk Senior Center off Medway Branch. He had been an assessor for the town, and was for many years the water collector. He was entrusted with many public responsibilities in his life, and because of his trustworthiness, he was nicknamed "Honest John." He had also been the Norfolk Citizen of the Year. An active member of the Norfolk Federated Church, he had sung in the church choir and was a Life Deacon. An avid sports fan, he loved the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. He enjoyed shooting and was a crack shot with a rifle. He enjoyed the outdoors and was a farmer at heart. He liked tending his flower and vegetable gardens. John really loved his family and most particularly his grandchildren. He enjoyed family celebrations and would guilt all into attending any and all family times. It is most fitting and appropriate that his calling hours are on what would have been his 85th birthday, and he would have wanted, if not insisted, that all members of his loving family be there. In addition to his much loved and devoted wife, he is survived by his loving children, Jonathan K. Evans of Saxonburg, Pa., Jennifer F. LeBlanc of North Attleboro, and Jeffrey F. Evans of Quakertown, Pa.; and his dear siblings, Charles Evans, Elizabeth Collier and Shirley Mackey. He was the devoted grandfather of Jay LeBlanc and Jamie LeBlanc; David, Elisabeth, Krista and Becca Evans; and Graham and Ben Evans. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Monday, June 22 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the RJ Ross Funeral Home, 135 South St., Route 1A, Wrentham Center. His funeral will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Sanctuary of the Norfolk Federated Church, 1 Union St., Norfolk Center. Burial will follow in the Norfolk Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Richard Ross and the RJ Ross Funeral Home, Wrentham Center. Visit our Web site at rjrossfuneralhomeinc.com.
