South Attleboro’s Lucas Gagne slides safely into second base with a double under the tag of Westport second baseman Alex Ciullo Wednesday night. South Attleboro won to remain unbeaten.
WESTWOOD - Former Mansfield High ace Joe Swindells delivered a five-hit shutout as the Foxboro American Legion Post 93 baseball team downed Westwood 6-0 Wednesday.
Swindells retired the first eight Westwood batters that he faced and struck out eight, while issuing one walk.
Post 93 didn't get on the board until the bottom of the fifth when Billy McGee led off with a walk and Dan Gad followed with a double to put runners at second and third. Joe Clagg followed with an RBI-single to score McGee and, with one out, Jimmy Gilmore brought Gad home with a sacrifice fly in foul territory.
Gad struck again in the sixth, stroking a two-run double with runners on first and second as Post 93 scored four runs in the inning. Gad finished the day 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Foxboro (4-1) hosts Canton tonight.
Norton 3, Fairhaven 2
FAIRHAVEN - Norton came up with a pair of fifth-inning runs to shade Fairhaven. Starting pitcher Nick Salvo and reliever Devin Askew combined to pitch an eight-hitter.
Salvo gave up seven hits and two runs, while striking out four, while Askew allowed one hit and earned the save. Askew initiated a 1-5-6 double play for the first two outs of the seventh inning, then got the final out with a strikeout.
South Attleboro 3,
Westport 0
ATTLEBORO - Connor Larkin was strong on the mound for South Attleboro, going six scoreless while Lucas Gagne closed the game out to keep Post 312 perfect on the year.
Larkin struck out six and gave up six hits over the six innings to get the win.
Post 312 scored all three runs in the first. Alex Whitkus led off the inning with an infield hit and Gagne followed with a walk. Matt Boulter hit what should have been a double play ball but the Westport defense misplayed the ball, allowing a run to score. Evan Dean eventually delivered the big hit in the inning, a two-run double to give South Attleboro a 3-0 lead.
Post 312, now 12-0 (9-0 district), plays tomorrow at home against Easton.
