Boys' tennis stars honored
ATTLEBORO - The King Philip Regional High boys' tennis team did what no other Hockomock League member has done in the past quarter century - beat Sharon High, and on the Eagles' home court nonetheless.
In taking their first-ever Hockomock League championship, the Warriors completed a dream regular season with 19 victories and a No. 2 seed for the MIAA Division 1-South Sectional Tournament.
Four members of that team, including No. 1 singles player Alex Huth, are among the elite diamond dozen of the area's tennis players selected to the 2009 All-Sun Chronicle Team.
Huth, who ascended to the top of the KP singles ladder, making the transition from a doubles player through his previous career years, is one of three repeat All-Sun Chronicle selections, including teammate and doubles player Jake Archibald and Dighton-Rehoboth High's No. 1 singles player Nate Fuller.
A half-dozen of the area's teams qualified for the MIAA Tournament with KP and North Attleboro (with 11 wins and the No. 14 seed) participating in the Division 1 Tournament; Dighton-Rehoboth (with 15 wins and as the No. 6 seed) and Bishop Feehan (with eight wins as the No. 13 seed) in the Division 2 Tournament; Seekonk (with nine wins as the No. 8 seed) and Norton (with nine wins as the No. 12 seed) in the Division 3 Tournament.
Unfortunately, it was an early exit for five of those half-dozen postseason entries, losing in the first round of competition. And wouldn't you know it, Sharon High, stopped the post-season run by coach Vic Augusto's Dighton-Rehoboth High Falcons into the quarterfinal round.
Huth and KP teammate Caleb Fields each posted 17 regular season wins at the No. 1 and 2 singles spot for coach Laurie Puddester's Hockomock League co-champion Warriors (KP losing the rematch against Sharon at home).
Archibald and KP teammate Alex Stalley not only had an incredible regular season unbeaten run of 20 victories, the duo advanced to the quarterfinal round of the MIAA Doubles Tournament.
The Fabulous Four from KP were joined by two other Hockomock League players on the All Sun Chronicle Team - North Attleboro High junior Sanjeeva Chetty and Mansfield High senior Will Condon, the Rocketeers' and Hornets' respective No. 1 singles players.
The Dighton-Rehoboth High Falcons, second only to Apponequet in the South Coast Conference, was represented by . Fuller, the Falcons' No. 1 singles player for the past three seasons.
In addition, the No. 1 singles players from Attleboro High (sophomore Tim Flynn), Bishop Feehan High (seniors Chris Swick and Kyle Nyskohus), Seekonk High (junior Rick Silva) and Norton High (senior Kevin Fisher), who combined to win four dozen matches. |
