Girls' track all-stars named

While compiling this year's Sun Chronicle girls' track all-star team, we briefly considered just giving all 21 spots to members of the Mansfield Hornets. OK, OK, OK, not really, but you might be able to make a case for taking such a drastic step. The Hornets were nearly unstoppable this season, especially the six - yeah, six - that made the all-star cut.

Take, for example, Michelle Jenssen. In the 400-meter hurdles, an event that had never been run competitively in Massachusetts before, she found her stride, going undefeated and setting a state record at the MIAA finals. Or Emily Broyles, the sophomore who stormed past the competition in the 400-meter hurdles on her way to a state championship. And the duo pair up with Katie Jenkins and Erica Unger, another Sun Chronicle all-star pick, to create one of the most dominate 4x400-meter relay teams Massachusetts has ever seen, winning a state and New England title.

The Hornets rounding out the list are Kelly McCabe, one of the best all-around track athletes of the spring season, 100-meter hurdle champ Meghan Ferreira and high-jump expert Kristen McDonagh. With this kind of talent, Mansfield coach Derek Ellis must be the luckiest high school track coach in the country.

Whereas Mansfield was dominate all over, Bishop Feehan crushed any and all competition in one event, in particular. So much so, in fact, that we were compelled to give the Shamrocks three all-star spots in the 3,200-meter run. That's right, the trio of Erin Murphy, Anisa Arsenault and Katie Barrett were so good at the two-mile, they were often - well, pretty much always - their only competition. Posting almost identical marks in the race, the three duked it out for the top spot whenever Bishop Feehan ran this race.

Bishop Feehan also had quite a triple jumper in Janelle McNeil, who edged out several girls in a very competitive field to take the Sun Chronicle all-star nod.
Of course, no all-star list would be complete without North Attleboro's Julianne Cappodona. The sprinter has been a force in the 100-meter dash ever since she stepped on campus. And, frankly, the senior's made the all-star cut so frequently the last four years, the list will feel a little empty without her next spring.

North Attleboro's Carolyn Udall, Robin Armstrong and Christy Deininger also made the list. Deininger is capable of doing almost anything you ask her, and that versatility paid off big for the junior this year. Armstrong proved herself one of the best javelin throwers in the area, and Udall takes the spot in the highly competitive long jump.

Foxboro's Shannon Cunningham has also become a regular here, and the senior capped off a stellar four-year career with the perfect icing on the cake - one last stop on the Sun Chronicle all-star team.

Seekonk's Jennifer Salit and Krista Chauvin check in at the 1,600-meter run and discus throw, respectively. By far the deepest fields in this year's selection shot put and discus were incredibly difficult to choose, but Chauvin proved herself throughout the whole year. No big deal, but she's pretty good at the shot put, too.

Both Ashley Noons from Dighton-Rehoboth and Norton's Kelly Allen were so good at the shot, we couldn't leave either off. Each capped off a great career with terrific senior seasons, earning them all-star picks once again.

Dighton-Rehoboth's Sam Reddington is another one of those runners that is too good at multiple events to pick just one. Her coaches must love that they've got another year with her - they can plop Reddington into pretty much any race, and she'll stand a good chance to win.

And last, but most certainly not least, is three-time all-star Dara Edge, who's broken just about every record in the Attleboro book. The list just wouldn't be complete without her.

CORRECTION: This story has been corrected to reflect that Dara Edge is on the Attleboro High School team.

" I've been to every girls track meet this season and there is no Dara Edge at Dighton-Rehoboth. "
