Why give smokers a break?

Even though cigarettes keep getting more expensive, people are still buying them. I think smoking is a waste of money and is really disgusting. It makes your clothes smell, teeth rot and causes bad breath.

At some jobs, I do not think it is right that smokers get to have a break every once in a while. Does that mean non-smokers get to say, "Oh, I need some fresh air, can I go outside for a bit?" It is like smokers are getting rewarded because they smoke.

I think the people who smoke think they have a very bad addiction to smoking. This makes them think they can take a break whenever they want to.

I work at a supermarket and I see so many young teenagers and even adults going outside to have a smoke. When I asked one of my managers what he thought about this situation, he said, "I am not saying anything but all I know is that they're not suppose to do it."

I do not think this is right. It is really unfair to those that do not smoke and work really hard.

My friend Jackie Hynes from Norton High works at a different supermarket. She has always noticed this and does not like it at all. "I think it is very unfair and really disgusting," she says. "Managers shouldn't allow employees to take cigarette breaks, ever."

I feel a lot of people feel the same way we do.

The solution to this situation would be for managers to step up and do something about it. They could also let non-smokers go outside once in a while for breaks.

It may be that the smokers have an addiction, but it is not fair to those who do not smoke. Non-smokers should be rewarded if smokers are.
