'Wolverine' not nearly as sharp as previous X-Men productions
BY BEN MARICLE MANSFIELD
With the success of the X-Men trilogy, Marvel decided to make a new X-Men series called "X-Men Origins." The first of the series, "Wolverine," was recently released in theaters.
The movie tries to tell Wolverine's story in as cool and action-packed a way as possible. I admire the fact that they did their best to follow the story that is in the comic books, but the movie failed in many other ways.
In the movie "X2," they tell you Wolverine's past in a way that is enjoyable and doesn't disappoint. "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" tries to add more plot to the story, but clearly the extra plot was not needed in any way.
Most of the action was filled with CGI, but at the same time it was pointless and filled with unnecessary violence.
In the movie, a character by the name of William Stryker, who has a lot to do with Wolverine's past, had was one of the best lines. In a scene with Stryker and Wolverine, Stryker says, "Become the animal. Embrace the other side." That line fits Wolverine very well, but director Gavin Hood makes Wolverine a ruthless uncaring killer, which he was not in the past X-Men films.
In the beginning of "Wolverine," they introduce other mutants that we have not yet seen on screen. These mutants in the comics are cool but in the movie they don't even tell you what half the mutant's powers are. They also don't tell you which ones are bad guys or good guys.
The best part of the movie was when Wolverine meets the Blob. That scene wasn't meant to be comical, but the rest of the movie was so stupid that the scene was funny.
The last fight in the movie was actually cool, but it ended in a non-epic way. What I was really excited about was the character of Deadpool. Deadpool was not disappointing and was one of my favorite characters in the movie, even though he only had 20 minutes of screen time.
At the end of the film, you see that Marvel is setting up for a new series and it just truly makes you wonder why they would start a new X-Men series when the Origins series already looks like a bad idea. The movie overall was watchable but I don't count on buying the DVD the day it comes out. Let's hope that the rest of the summer movie season is better than this.
