New 'Trek' is terrific, except for Bana

Eric Bana portrays Nero in 'Star Trek.'

The Enterprise has flown back into movie theaters.

J.J. Abrams ("Lost," "Alias") directs "Star Trek," the latest installment to the franchise that began decades ago as a TV show starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.

The new "Star Trek" movie, which was released in May, tells how Kirk becomes captain of the Enterprise and Spock becomes the most famous Vulcan in the galaxy. The movie is very entertaining and very funny at times.

Abrams knows how to use comedy when needed, without slowing down the plot.

The biggest problem with the film is the villain Nero. The character is just not written well and the actor who portrayed him, Eric Bana ("Hulk," "Munich") just does not know how to act. (Please leave Hollywood, I really have had enough of you).
Other than Bana, everyone was cast perfectly for their parts in "Star Trek." Clearly the best part of the movie was Zachary Quinto's performance as Spock.

It was so good that you think you were watching Nimoy at a young age. There is no one else in Hollywood I can think of who could play the role of young Spock as well as Quinto.

As in any epic fanboy movie, there has to be a romantic side of the story, and I was very impressed with how the romance played out. I really enjoyed that plotline, also.

"Star Trek" successfully sets the stage for more movies for the new generation of fans. I am truly looking forward to the next two Star Trek films.
