KIRBY: Chemawa aces hosting senior event

A big tip of the visor goes to Glen Bourque and all the folks at Chemawa Golf Course in North Attleboro which last week played host to the Attleboro Area Golf Association Senior Championship.

Regulars at the short, tight 18-hole layout near the South Attleboro and Cumberland lines praised the difficult setup from superintendent Jeff Lefebvre and crew, particular the quick greens and devious pin positions. Newcomers marveled at the conditioning of a public course that gets heavy traffic.

And everyone in the field of more than 100 had high praise for the hospitality of Bourque and his workers. For instance, Bourque had workers at the 13th tee - which usually has a long wait - and at the turn distributing free fruit cups, a nice touch for healthy golfers in need of nourishment.

And, yes, that was this humble typist's name on the list of players in last week's Sun Chronicle. The 82 I scored was not enough to win anything but not so bad that I'll have to hang my head in shame.

There's always next year - to win or to fail miserably. That's the joy of golf. But Chemawa will bring me back.
AAGA golf clinic

The Attleboro Area Golf Association will sponsor its annual junior clinic this Saturday at the Highland Country Club in Attleboro. The free clinic is open to boys and girls of all ages and of all levels of abilities, from beginner through intermediate players. The clinic will run from 10 a.m. until noon under the direction of Highland CC pro Drew Chapman. Clubs will be provided for those without a set. Following the session a luncheon will be served.

Wentworth in spotlight

If you happen to have NESN on for something other than the Red Sox, you may have caught a glimpse of a local golf course recently. Wentworth Hills Golf Club in Plainville was featured on the network's "Golf Destinations" show, with host Kerry Connolly. The show premiered on June 7 and was repeated on June 10 and June 12.

It's that time again

It's hard to believe it's that time again, but tickets for the 2009 Deutsche Bank Championship, the PGA Tour event that visits TPC Boston in Norton Sept. 1-7, go on sale for two weeks only or until sold out beginning Friday.

Tickets will be available online at www.dbchampionship.com, by telephone at 877-TIX-4DBC or in person at any local Stop & Shop grocery store from June 19-July 2. Ten percent of the proceeds from all tickets purchased at Stop & Shop will go to the Stop & Shop/Giant Family Foundation, a Founders Club partner of the tournament.

Fans can also win tickets to the Championship before they go on sale by staying tuned to the Championship's Facebook "Wall" page at www.facebook.com/pages/Deutsche-Bank-Championship/123417575083. To win tickets, become a "Fan" of the Deutsche Bank Championship and post "I want Deutsche Bank Championship tickets!" on Thursday at noon. The first three people to post will each win two MasterCard Club tickets to the 2009 Deutsche Bank Championship. Fans also can follow the Championship on Twitter at http://twitter.com/dbchampionship.

In addition, Tuesday, Sept. 1 will be designated Military Appreciation Day. All active-duty U.S. military personnel, U.S. military retirees and other veterans will be allowed complimentary grounds admission (with their military ID or proof of military service) for the Deutsche Bank Championship Red Sox Legends & Friends Pro-Am and professional practice rounds on that day. Military can call the main ticket line at 877-TIX-4DBC or visit www.dbchampionship.com to learn more about this program.

Big stars, big shots

Next Tuesday, you'll have the opportunity to witness A-list celebrities and some of the biggest names in the history of professional sports compete in long drive championship at Foxwoods Resort Casino's award-winning Lake of Isles course.

"Big Shots Titans at the Tee" pairs the best long drivers in America with celebrities and sports legends such as NFL greats Lawrence Taylor, Marcus Allen, Eric Dickerson, Jim McMahon and Joe Theismann, Oscar-nominated actor Mark Wahlberg, MLB Hall of Famers Jim Rice and Goose Gossage and Olympic champion and reality TV show star Bruce Jenner in a challenge that tests power, skill and accuracy.

Stadium seating on the first hole will allow golf enthusiasts the opportunity to watch the event, which is set to air on the Fox Network in September. The fun begins at 10 a.m.
