Police: Autistic teen beaten in NA

NORTH ATTLEBORO - A 16-year-old autistic boy was beaten up when he confronted a teenager who allegedly sold him fake marijuana, police said Friday.

The boy was treated at Sturdy Memorial Hospital for cuts and scrapes to his knees and elbows. Police allege he suffered the injuries when he was allegedly beaten up by Nelson R. Bliss, 17.

Bliss' lawyer, Daniel Rich of Norton, said Friday that the autistic boy suffered the injuries after falling from his bicycle before he met his client at the Hess Gas station on North Washington Street.

Bliss, a former North Attleboro boy who is visiting relatives, pleaded innocent in Taunton District Court on Friday to assault and battery on a disabled person, unarmed robbery, distributing a counterfeit substance and conspiracy to violate drugs laws.

A second individual, Michael Felix, 17, of 1 Hope St., Apt. 3 in North Attleboro, pleaded innocent to distributing a counterfeit substance and conspiracy to violate drug laws, but was not charged in the alleged assault. The two teenagers were arrested Thursday night after Detective Daniel Arrighi came upon the alleged victim riding his bicycle on Church Street.

Detective Lt. David Dawes said police found $16 in cash in Bliss' sock during booking at the police station. Police allege it was the money the boy handed over for the leaves he thought was marijuana.

Bliss admits to selling the fake marijuana, but denies assaulting the boy, his lawyer said.

Judge Gregory L. Phillips set bail for Bliss at $200 cash. Felix is free without bail.

The cases were continued to July 24.

" Liss, look at the headline and the first sentence of the article. Both lead with "Autistic Boy". Why is the fact that he's autistic so relevant that it has to be in the headline and in the first sentence? If he wasn't autistic, it probably wouldn'y have made the paper, or at the very least "Local Teen Beaten" would have been more appropriate. If it was an African-American or Oriental teen, would the headline have been "African-American teen beaten?". "

" are you all really this ignorant? yeah, the fact that he is autistic has nothing to do with it, but it made news because a boy was BEATEN. jfc how stupid are you people? "

" Perhaps they mentioned the fact that the kid was autistic because he was easily taken advantage of by a couple of amateur drug dealers who should be severly punished for the assault. A few months in juvie should do the trick. "

" Why does it matter if the boy has autism? If he's out there buying pot at 16 years of age he's obviously high functioning enough that it really shouldn't be an issue to report, other than to sensationalize the story. The real issue is that he's 16 and buying pot, not that he has autism. "
