FALL RIVER - The Fall River Diocese 2009 Catholic Charities Appeal reached a total of $4,280,141.52, the third highest in history and $26,000 - or six-tenths of 1 percent - below the all-time high in 2007. It fell short of last year's total of $4,296,300.63 by $16,000, the diocese announced in a news release.
"The people in the Diocese of Fall River have once again demonstrated a spirit of sacrifice and a true desire to share with their neighbors and to help change their lives for the better," said Bishop George W. Coleman.
The bishop extended his "heartfelt thanks" in a letter published in this week's issue of the diocesan newsweekly, The Anchor.
"I am especially grateful to the many benefactors who made an extra effort to respond generously, perhaps anticipating the difficulties others may experience this year," Coleman added. "In light of the current economic recession that has made its bitter impact felt particularly in our region, your contributions have been more important than ever."
Proceeds from the annual springtime appeal provide the financial support for the programs and ministries sponsored by the diocese in Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands. It ran in the diocese's 91 parishes from May 1 to June 23.
