GIRLS TRACK: MHS wins States

FITCHBURG - First it was the Hockomock League, then it was the Division 2 Championship.

Now, the Mansfield High School girls' track team can call itself state champions.

The Hornets ran away from the field on Saturday at the All-State meet at Fitchburgh College, winning the team standings by 19 points. Mansfield had 62 points while second-place Newton South had 43.

The Hornets had three individual state champions in sophomore Emily Broyles in the 400 meters., senior Meghan Ferreira in the 100 hurdles and senior Michelle Jenssen in the 400 hurdles and another relay champions en route to the blowout win.

"I told the girls you just have to be perfect today, these girls were just on today," Mansfield coach Derek Ellis said. Last year the Hornets finished in third, just two points away from first. This year Mansfield left no doubt about who would come home with the trophy.

The Hornet 4x400 meter team of Katie Jenkins, Broyles, Erica Unger and Jenssen shattered their own school record and set a new meet record, while Kelly McCabe turned in a personal best jump of 36-8 in the triple jump to take fourth place. McCabe also took third in the shot put while Jess Eason took sixth.

Sophomore Kristen McDonagh improved upon her school record in the high jump with a leap of 5-6, one of four Hornets to improve on a school record.
