Building owner on the hook for renovations if office closes
NORTH ATTLEBORO - George Carney said he has put about $400,000 in renovations into his Kelley Boulevard office building in recent months, only to learn the Registry of Motor Vehicles is terminating its lease and moving out.
"We're between a rock and hard place," Carney said, explaining he has to complete the renovations even though they were designed with the registry in mind.
Carney said he entered into a 10-year lease with the registry several months ago with the understanding he would do renovations.
The registry can get out of the lease now because it is subject to appropriation and the Legislature cut funding, he said.
Carney said not only is he losing his tenant and rental money, but area businesses might suffer because they benefit from registry customers.
"The registry is a magnet," he said.
The renovations include new windows, a heating system, air conditioning, a new electrical system and special $70,000 counters for registry business.
A registry spokeswoman said no taxpayer funds were used for the renovations.
Carney, the owner of Raynham-Taunton Greyhound Park, said he does not blame Registry of Motor Vehicles chief Rachel Kaprielian for the closure because it was forced upon her by the budget.
But state Rep. Betty Poirier, R-North Attleboro, and Sen. Scott Brown, R-Wrentham, said the Taunton registry office was a more logical candidate for closure, but was spared at the expense of North Attleboro.
Brown even wondered if political pressure was involved in saving the Taunton office.
Poirier and Brown said the North Attleboro office is bigger and busier than the Taunton office.
They said they will soon meet with Kaprielian to discuss the situation.
North Attleboro is one of 11 offices being closed to save $1.7 million in rent.

Does anyone besides me recall when the moved the RMV to Roxbury, suddenly it was discovered that it was a "sick building" and no one came to work. Why is that during the "sick building" mania I never heard of a "sick building" that was in the private sector.
Does anyone else recall that the manager of the North Attleboro office was killed in a skiing accident, that was about 3 years ago. 5 weeks later a number of the employees were still out on "sick leave". I inquired about their illness and found that they were still suffering from "stress' because the manager had died.
Shortly, I will be voting with my feet. "

That is silly.
This guy "pays to play", but didn't pay enough obviously.
You don't think there is anything wrong with charging 12k a month in rent, then the guy who collects the money, turns around and gives it to the legislatures who make the decision to rent it from him?
There is a reason why the state didn't just buy a piece of property for the registry years ago. Why would they pay millions in rent to this guy instead of buying their own building.
That is the question that nobody is asking. "

Looks like the whole family is "working" for you at the track---that must be nice.
"simple tastes with no real hobbies beyond the nearly
20 side businesses he runs, Carney owns homes in
Falmouth, Florida, on Rowes Wharf, and in Brockton
where his house sits across the street from where he
grew up and where he lives 98 percent of the time. Its
comfortable yet Spartan colonial garrison for which he
paid $38,000 about 40 years ago, He vows that he will
leave the house when they take him out in a box.
George Carney owns more land than Moses was promised.
In addition to the 130-acre Raynham Park, he is
the proprietor of about 80 acres of Brockton Fairgrounds
property where he has been owner and operator"

How is all the money you paid in "campaign contributions" working out for you?
You live on the government teet, you die by it as well.
