Post 93 first rate

FOXBORO - Make it two-for-two now for the Foxboro Legion baseball team.

Behind the stellar pitching of Mansfield High product Bryan Saffelle, Post 93 took its second victory of the season over first place Norwood on Monday, winning 4-2 at Foxboro High School.

Saffelle struck out 11 batters in going the distance for Post 93, allowing two runs on just two hits. The powerful right-hander struck out the side in the seventh to seal the victory for Foxboro.

"You get into a groove where you know that something is going to go right," Saffelle said. "I just felt great, my legs were felling great today, that's normally my big problem."

Norwood is still in first place with a record of 15-6, playing far more games than Foxboro (now 11-3). The standings, done by points and not by winning percentage, have Foxboro now eight points (or four wins) behind Norwood.

"That still keeps us in the hunt which is nice," Foxboro coach Bill Travers said. "We've beat them twice so we know we can play with them."

Foxboro jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on Norwood starter Pat Hickey in the second inning. Brian Swanton started the inning with a one-out walk before Joe Clagg singled to put runners on first and second. After Joe Swindells went down swinging Matt Cote hit a grounder up the middle that the Norwood defense booted, loading the bases with Foxboro High School products for their high school teammate Mike Farrell.

The shortstop, hitting at the top of the lineup, knocked a full-count pitch to deep center, putting it over the centerfielder's head for a bases-clearing triple to give Saffelle a lead he would not relinquish.

Norwood struck back in the third when Nick Rodriquez led off the inning with a walk, went to second on a single, third on a bunt and home on a sacrifice fly as Norwood manufactured a run.

But the visitors would score just once more on a solo home run to left field from Brandon Davis in the fourth. From there Saffelle was nearly perfect, retiring ten of the last 11 hitters, allowing just one runner to reach via a hit-by-pitch in the seventh.

But the righty recovered, striking out the next two hitters to end the game.

"The only thing that got me mad was when he hit the guy, because that's the tying run and then your brain starts to fry," Travers said. "But I just could tell they weren't going to touch him the way he was throwing. He had both of his pitches."

Foxboro scored its only other run on a sacrifice fly by Billy McGee in the third inning to score Nick Thrasher.

Foxboro has eight games in the next six days, starting with a matchup at home tonight against Franklin.

New Bedford 8, South Attleboro 7

ATTLEBORO - South Attleboro kept fighting back, but in the end it Post 312 came up just 90 feet short.

Down 6-3 in the sixth, South Attleboro scored three runs to tie the game up again. Then, down two runs in the bottom of the seventh, Post 312 scored once and left the tying run on third, losing just their fourth game this year and only the second in league play.

Luke Gagne started on the mound and went five innings, giving up three runs. Paul Piatelli relieved him in the sixth, going two innings and surrendering five runs.

Ryan Lee had two hits for Post 312 and the RBI-groundout in the seventh that brought South Attleboro one run closer, but with two outs Gagne grounded out to second base to end the game.

South Attleboro, 18-4 (13-2), plays today at home against Taunton.

Norfolk 9, Medfield 4

MEDFIELD - Putting up a six spot in the second inning, Post 335 cruised over Medfield to take over fourth place in the Zone 6 standings (the top five teams making the playoffs).

Chris Ford powered the offense, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Alec Palioca was 2-for-5 with three runs driven in. Cam Walsh went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Alex Lagos drove in a pair of runs.

Brandon Howard worked four solid innings on the mound and Mike Arthur pitched the final three, Medfield scoring three in the bottom of the seventh to make for the 9-4 final.

Norfolk (9-9-1) is off today before returning to action Wednesday, home against Dedham.
