(SUBMITTED PHOTO) GOBIS: Hopkins takes his cuts this summer BY PETER GOBIS SUN CHRONICLE STAFF ** Former Bishop Feehan High Shamrock Greg Hopkins is having a terrific summer season with Haymarket (40 minutes outside of Washington, D.C.) in the Virginia Summer College Baseball Team. The starting shortstop is leading the Senators and Shenandoah Valley League with a .458 batting average and a .708 slugging percentage. The St. John's University junior, who calls Mansfield his hometown, has just two errors in the field, too. "It's like the game slows down for him," said Haymarket coach Ray Fecteau. "Everything is real smooth. There's no panic or tightness in him" ... ** Former Foxboro High Warrior and UMass-Amherst Minutewoman Mary Shea played in the Women's National Field Hockey championships again at Virginia Beach, for the Northeast high performance team for the third straight year. Shea, a midfielder, captain and 2008 season MVP at UMass played in all six games and netted a goal ... ** "We'll have one of the best batteries around," related Bishop Feehan High baseball coach Mark Cooke of pitchers Tommy Romero and Sam Dodge (already being recruited by BC, Georgetown, URI, Ivy League schools) along with catcher Billy Karalis - all captains for the 2010 season ... ** Kali Hosford is taking over the reigns of the Attleboro High girls' swimming program this fall, while current Bombardier coach Ari Weinstein will continue with the boys during the winter, then direct the entire program when AHS joins the co-ed Hockomock League for the 2010-11 winter season ... ** Captains-elect for the 2010 defending South Coast Conference champion Dighton-Rehoboth High baseball team will be pitcher-first baseman Mike Goulden, outfielder Andy Cherico (son of former Foxboro great Kip Cherico) and outfielder Casey Furtado ... ** "In two years we'll be legitimate," related Bishop Feehan High boys' lacrosse coach Kevin Young, whose Shamrocks qualified for the MIAA Tournament in their very first season as a varsity team. "I was very happy with the season, but there are a lot of little steps to take" ... ** No. 2 singles player Jeremy Carroll was the 'Most Improved' member of Dan Etter's Mansfield High boys' tennis team this season, while No. 1 singles player Will Condon was the Hornet MVP. Ben Yeransian, who played at No. 3 singles, will captain next year's team ... ** At the breakup dinner for Jeremy Nodelman's North Attleboro High boys' lacrosse team, defender Barrett Holden was the Rocketeer MVP, Jeremy Roche received the 'Offensive Player of the Year,' Matt Catalano received the 'Defensive Player of the Year' and Toby Berkowitz was the 'Most Improved' player ... ** Captains for coach Bob L'Homme's 2010 Bishop Feehan High boys' spring track team will be distance runner Bob McShane, javelin thrower Liam Doherty, sprinter Kevin Beland and middle distance runner Mike Albert ... ** Sanjeeva Chetty, the No. 1 singles player for Sean Mulkerrins' North Attleboro High boys' tennis team this season, will be the Rocketeer captain next season and one of only returning No. 1 players in the Hockomock League ... ** Former Norton High softball star Karissa Bettencourt was named to the All-Northeast 10 Conference softball team for a third time and the All-Academic Team (for a third time with a 3.63 grade index). Bettencourt batted at a .315 rate during his career at Division II Southern New Hampshire and owns a school record 143 hits ... ** Pitcher-outfielder Chris Lenihan was tabbed the 'Most Improved' member of Ted Currle's Norton High baseball team, while second baseman Scott Fraatz is the Lancer captain-elect for next season. Notably, Currle's Lancers stole 45 bases in 50 attempts, "an amazing number consider that we sat back and pounded the ball" ... ** "It's going to be interesting next year," said Mansfield High girls' lacrosse coach Dawn Kafel, who returns just two senior starters (Kelly Coughlin and Jacki Allen) from this season's 16-win team and two other seniors, Kara Grandin and Sarah Marcotte ... ** North Attleboro's Justin Dion was honored as a member of the NCAA Division 1 Sacred Heart University fencing team, the freshman being named to the Pioneer Conference and Northeast Fencing League all-first teams, while also receiving the Pioneer Coach's Award for exemplary performance ... ** "She's a quiet, little player, but she is going to be a real force," related Mansfield High girls' lacrosse coach Dawn Kafel of junior midfielder Kelly Coughlin, who had 23 goals and 26 assists this season ... ** St. John's women's soccer player Jen Leaverton, the former Bishop Feehan High School star, has been named to the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) Team of the Week for the third time this season. Playing for the Bay State Selects out of Easton, Leaverton led the team with three goals in a key 4-2 win over New York A.C. on June 28. The St. John's sophomore scored all her goals outside the 18-yard box, and two additional shots just missed and hit the crossbar ... ** If you haven't been watching the transaction wire, former Providence Bruins Pascal Pelletier (Columbus), Matt Hendricks (Colorado) and Andrew Raycroft (Toronto) all took up new NHL residences ...
