Season of slap in store

Experts expect a bad season for mosquitoes.
Warmth brings out mosquitoes
Get ready to add some slap to your summer weather.
After a cool, rainy spring and start to summer, which has kept mosquitoes at bay and people indoors, warmer weather this weekend is expected to start to bring out the worst as people swarm outdoors.
"There's no question about it, there will be more than the average number with the extra water, especially this time of year," Wayne Andrews, superintendent of Bristol Country Mosquito Control, said.
With warmer weather on the way, it will also start percolating mosquito-borne viruses, such as eastern equine encephalitis and West Nile, he said.
Andrews said those viruses are not usually spotted in mosquitoes for another two or three weeks.
No mosquitoes have yet been found with the viruses.
He said the cool temperatures at night have made mosquito collections used to monitor and test populations more difficult.
But that won't be the case if temperatures rise as forecast in the coming week.
The prospect of mosquito season heating up has not been lost on homeowners, more than 6,700 of whom have already called to have their properties sprayed, Andrews said.
A few camps have also requested spraying.
The difficulty is that the agency can't spray when it rains and it's been doing that almost every day.
The agency no longer does aerial spraying and uses Anvil, a synthetic pyrethroid.
He said that while the office has been busy with requests, the numbers are down slightly from last year, something he suspects has to do with people staying indoors during the wet weather.
