Mansfield man held in slaying of daughter

MANSFIELD - Troubled and with a history of mental illness, 35-year-old Kristopher Griffin's life took a dark turn two weeks ago when the relationship with his girlfriend and mother of his 6-year-old daughter broke apart.Griffin, who police said was disabled and had told others he suffered from bipolar disorder, moved temporarily to a camper owned by friends a short distance across town.

Sometime after that, something snapped.

Griffin was charged with murder and home invasion Friday after allegedly entering the girl's Chilson Avenue home and slashing her to death with a filet knife.

In a particularly bizarre twist, Griffin told investigators God told him to kill the child.

The body of Kaitlynn Griffin was found shortly after 4 a.m. with her throat cut in the basement of the 93 Chilson Ave. home she shared with her mother.

"Yes, she's gone," a prosecutor said Griffin told police. "I had to save her. I killed my little girl."

Griffin stood silently, wearing a hospital johnny, and bowed his head while an innocent plea was entered on his behalf in Taunton District Court.

Judge John Canavan ordered Griffin held without bail and sent to Bridgewater State Hospital for evaluation prior to his next scheduled appearance Aug. 12 in Attleboro District Court.

Mansfield Police Chief Arthur O'Neill said Griffin apparently jimmied open a screen in a side door at his girlfriend's home, apparently as both she and the girl slept.

Other children of "varying ages" also stayed at the home, O'Neill said, but only the girl and her mother were home at the time. The other youngsters, O'Neill said, have "been accounted for" and are safe.

Griffin previously lived at the Chilson Avenue address, but had been estranged from the little girl and her mother for about two weeks, Bristol County Assistant District Attorney Cynthia Brackett said.

He had recently been staying in a camper owned by friends at 85 Ware St., about a mile away.

Mansfield police initially received a 911 call about 4 a.m. from a resident at the Ware Street address, reporting that Griffin had left a note indicating he might harm himself.

Officer Joshua Ellender drove to the address, took a report, and asked Mansfield patrol units to be on the lookout for Griffin.

Shortly thereafter, Ellender located Griffin about a half-mile from 85 Ware Street and began talking to him. Griffin was not wearing shoes and claimed he was walking to CVS to obtain medication.

About 15 minutes after making the initial call, the residents of 85 Ware St. again called 911, reporting a second note allegedly left by Griffin asking "forgiveness for sending Katie to heaven."

Griffin was asked whether he had harmed the child, and allegedly he said: "She's gone."

While being questioned by police, he allegedly made suicidal comments, asked police to shoot him and banged his head repeatedly on the roof of the police cruiser.

Griffin had traces of blood on his hands and clothing, according to information presented by a prosecutor at the arraignment.

At the same time, police were dispatched to 93 Chilson Ave., and after a short search found Kaitlynn's body covered by a blanket in the basement.

Brackett said during the arraignment that Griffin has been hospitalized at least twice in the past.

He was most recently hospitalized at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro about two weeks ago, about the time he broke up with his girlfriend, Deborah Mons. Mons is Kaitlynn's mother, according to a 2003 Sun Chronicle birth announcement.

Griffin was hospitalized after Kaitlynn's mother said she planned to move down South with her two children, including a boy, prosecutors said. O'Neill said the second child was not Griffin's.

Brackett said Griffin was previously subject to a lengthy hospitalization, beginning in October 2006. She did not say where that hospitalization occurred or anything else about its circumstances.

O'Neill said Griffin had a police record that included "15 or 16" entries, mostly motor vehicle offenses. He said Griffin did not have a history of being in trouble with police and there was no indication he might turn violent.

Griffin, a native of Homestead, Fla., had been living in New England for seven to eight years, the chief said.

O'Neill said he did not have any information on whether Griffin was employed but believed he was "on disability."

The yellow two-family home on Chilson, which is across the street from a Lance Buick and Pontiac dealership, was roped off with crime scene tape Friday.

The investigation into the child's death by Mansfield police, the Bristol County District Attorney's Office and investigators in the Bristol County Crime Prevention and Control unit is continuing.

The last murder in Mansfield was July 7, 2008, when Mark Hayden allegedly shot Andrew Colwell in an apartment complex parking lot in what authorities called a soured drug deal.

That murder was the first in Mansfield in 17 years.

" I think we should all listen to veritas77. they knew him and know better. Atticus you are way out of line. To insinuate that by being married in a male/female legal contract that this would never happen is so insane I dont know where to begin. I agree with Veritas77 100%. The father was just going through a tough time off his meds and he should get some counsiling before he is allowed back into society. "

" Atticus, the issue may also be that many who experience domestic violence are afraid to leave the situation and therefore do not get divorced. If I thought someone might beat or kill me for making them angry, I'd think twice about leaving and making them angry. It's a sad situation.

As for this situation, I still can't believe it happened around here. That poor little girl and her poor mother. As a mother my heart aches for them. "

What I am suggesting is that perhaps the people who get married are "different types". Do your own survey, compare the various articles you read and note whether the "father" is married to the mother. I except the spectacular cases we all hear of, of course it does happen. I am talking about the broad spectrum.

As to abuse. I have peronally represented over 500 women in divorce cases. I have asked each if their husband ever hit them. Of the 500, or so, only 3 responded that he had. Two of those didn't blame him because he had caught her in bed with another man. Still, I kept hearing the reports. So, I began asking other divorce lawyers. Their response was universal, "very rare". It may have to do with social class, most relatively less well off people haven't hired a lawyer for their divorce in 10-15 years. About 70% are now "do it yourself".

You have to be cautious with news reports involving numbers. I recommend "A mathematican reads the news". For instance, did you know that 70% of the foreclosures in the United States are in just 12 counties? So, that puts another perspective on it. If you think it is bad here, there are places where it is much worse. I wouldn't be surprised to find the foreclosure rate is Attleboro is less than 1% when compared with the total number of houses. " First I would like to say my heart aches for this poor child and her mother and family. This is such a tradgedy. Next, someone asked for STATS ...well here they are. 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence and 74 percent of people know someone personally affected by DV. 3 women and 1 male are murdered by an intimate partner on a DAILY basis. And actually, most of those murdered are MARRIED.50 percent of males who abuse their partners also abuse their children and 1 in 5 high school students are victims of physical or sexual abuse. Instead of pointing the blame here,we need prevention. Let's start by teaching our sons and daughters about healthy relationships and that violence of any kind is unacceptable. "

" This story is so incredibly creepy on so many levels. First, Chilson is a block away from my home and my family and I walk pass this house every day to go to Dunkin Donuts and Fresh Catch. To see all the reports, neighbors, police and investigators was quite a shock.

Second, I have a son who is almost the same age as this little girl. If my memory serves me right, she may have been in the same program as my son a couple of years earlier.

Selfishly, I am glad that this guy is out of my neighborhood. I would hate to think of what would happen if he snapped again and my children are playing in our yard. "

" I am so saddend by this, we did not know the girl but we do live several houses away and me and my girls 3 and 8 years old did see the little girl and boy when we would walk to dunkin donuts, my girls would wave to her as we walked by. I beleive they should not have sent him to Bridgewater but into general population at Walpole so they could finish him off the way he needs to be treated. What could a 6 year old child ever do to an adult. this was a selfish act by a coward and he should be tried in a death penalty state.

Rest in Peace little girl. someone will protect you in heaven. and my condolences go out to the mother and brother as well. "

What is wrong with you?? An innocent, little girls is DEAD. You're implying that it's her fault for having the misfortune of sharing DNA with her brutal killer? I hope YOU are not procreating.

WHAT?? A 6 year old child is DEAD and your only comment is to slam the Chief of Police? Whichever planet you're from .... please go back! "

" Atticus,
Maybe the divorce lawyerS (you talked to more than 1?, really?) didn't give you accurate statistics.
Just off the top of my head, have you heard of Scott Peterson? There are 2 of them, the one that killed his wife (married, obviously) who was 9 months pregnant, and the ex-cop who killed 2 out of 3 of his wives. Both guys were married, til they widowed themselves.
Domestic abuse has nothing to do with a marriage certificate, it has everything to do with the individual.
That's like saying unconditionally that kids brought up by both parents in the home are 'better' than kids brought up by a single/divorced parent. Not true!
There are examples and exceptions to everything. "

" Atticus you need to get your head out of uranus. Since you have first hand knowledge directly from the so-called experts "divorce lawyers" then it must be true! "

gridkid wrote on Jul 25, 2009 11:30 AM:

" Are you suggesting that this poor woman should have married this lunatic and kept him in the home? Are you suggesting that domestic abuse does not happen very often between couples who are still married? How about this: the reason some of these people who committed these heinous crimes were removed from the home before they could harm anyone else in the family. Maybe you are sugfesting that when people who become legally married, that one of them would not turn out to be a monster.
it almost seems as though you diverting blame. Married or not, This guy is a lunatic and there was probably a REAL good reason he wasnt married to this woman. "

Atticus wrote on Jul 25, 2009 10:25 AM:

" Does anyone but notice how relatively rare these incidents are when the parents are married? The same seems to be true of "spousal abuse", in tacit recognition of this it has become "domestic violence". I don't have figures on the latter, but I have spoken with many divorce lawyers who tell me it is "very rare". "
