Norton expands Halloween event

NORTON - Norton's most elaborate Halloween celebration in recent memory might have kids shouting "Booyah!"

A three-day, all-ages spookfest starting with two nights of Haunted Happenings at the Attleboro-Norton YMCA's Camp Finberg and ending with Norton's annual Chartley parade are eyed for Halloween weekend, Oct. 23 to 25.

The Attleboro-Norton YMCA's advisory committee is behind it, joined by resident Bryan Faria, who, two years ago, proposed developing a nonprofit haunted maze or a haunted woods as a community fundraiser.

A haunted walk through the woods, a campfire with hot cocoa and ghost stories and a spooky moonwalk with people running around dressed as Spider-Man are among the activities being discussed for the Haunted Happenings at Finberg's 80 wooded acres off Route 123.

The event's scope hinges on recruiting volunteers, Faria and YMCA Director of Operations Danielle Sicard have told selectmen. "The ideas for this are endless," Faria said. "You don't actually need to rent a Halloween costume to participate in this."

Residents, community groups and businesses interested in helping are asked to e-mail hauntedhappenings@attleboroymca.org.

"We would like to grow," Sicard said. "We could get 500 people to come to these each of these nights."

The Haunted Happenings are scheduled for 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 23 and 24, Faria said. He said he believes admission will be charged, although he was unsure how much.

Sicard and the YMCA stepped forward to run the Halloween parade, which dates back about 15 years, even as the Y's contract to manage Norton's recreation programs ends Oct. 15.

The YMCA essentially served as Norton's recreation director the past three years.

However, the town's budget crunch resulted in only the town pool at Everett Leonard Park being funded this year.

"It's scary how close we came this year to not having a parade," Selectwoman Mary Steele said.

Sicard said parade registration forms will be available soon on the YMCA's Web site, www.attleboroymca.org.

All parade proceeds will support special events in Norton, she said.
