Feehan harriers impress

WARWICK, RI - There are few superlatives left to describe the Bishop Feehan girls cross country team.

Deep, balanced, filled with talent, the nationally-ranked Shamrocks added another accolade to their growing list of achievements on Saturday afternoon, winning the Championship Race at the Ocean State Invitational at Goddard Park in Warwick, Rhode Island.

Eleven teams from around New England and its surrounding states competed in the high-level invitational race, with the Shamrocks edging out Greenwich Central from Connecticut to take home the crown.

"This is by far the best team we've ever had," Bishop Feehan coach Bob L'Homme said. "Winning a state championship in 2003 was a highlight in my career but this team, if we continue the path we're on, we should do well in the state meet."

Every Feehan runner ran a personal best over the 3.1 mile course. Erin Murphy led the way, finishing fifth overall with a time of 18:54. Fellow senior Jen Thomas was right behind her in ninth with a time of 18:57, while junior Viviana Hanley was tenth with a time of 18:59. The three times were the second, third, and fourth fastest times any Feehan girl has ever run.

Just as important to the Shamrocks victory were the finishes of Anisa Arsenault (19th, 19:26) and Erin Svensen (36th, 20:10), the top five performances counting from a team counting towards the team standings.

L'Homme has been bringing his teams to Brown Invitational and now the Ocean State Invitational since 1992 and has never won the Championship Race.

Also on the girls side, Erin Doyle was the highest finisher in the freshman race, taking 17th with a time of 17:30 on the two-and-a-half mile course. Shelly Magyar took 8th in the junior varsity race with a time of 22:06.

Not to be outdone, the boys team was almost as impressive, winning the varsity small school race by a healthy margin over St. Rose of New York.

Bobby McShane took fifth overall with a time of 16:39 as the Shamrock boys had a 31-point cushion over the next closest team. Alex Murray finished 13th, Kevin O'Brien 17th, Will Clerx 22nd and Tim Gill 24th.

The freshman boys took second, finishing just behind East Greenwich, with Alex Conway taking fourth with a time of 14:27 and Henry Dodge finishing seventh in 14:36.

The JV Shamrocks won the junior varsity race, beating second-place Newburyport by just three points. Mike Wood finished third in 18:04 while Bill Looney was right behind him in fourth.

** For SEEKONK, Johnny Gregorek ran a personal-best 15:53 to take third overall in the Championship Race individual standings. Cody Archembault (16:54, 18th place) and Nate Larrimer (17:09, 31st) also had PR times as Seekonk finished sixth place in the team standings. La Salle Academy won the meet while the Warriors were the third best team from Massachusetts.

For the girls, Jenn Salit had a PR 19:55 for third in the individual race, while teammate Emily Gagliardi also had a personal best (20:31) for 14th. The Spencer twins - Anna and Rachel - finished within seven seconds of each other for 55th and 59th respectively. Both Seekonk teams will run against Fairhaven on Tuesday.
