Seekonk knocks off Falcons

Dighton-Rehoboth’s Jack Fisher (12) goes up to head the ball against Seekonk’s Brenson Gouveia, D-R’s Mason Moynihan and Seekonk’s Edgar Lopez (4). Seekonk won 4-1.

REHOBOTH - Any win is a good win, but more so when you beat your archrivals - on their home turf! Just as the Seekonk High boys' soccer team did Wednesday at the Bliss Soccer Complex, scoring twice in each half to storm past Dighton-Rehoboth 4-1 in the South Coast Conference match.

Aris Santiago (at 18:17) and Jeff Magina (at 24:13) gave Seekonk a two-goal cushion before Falcon senior striker Keith Rose drilled a low right-footed shot past Warrior netminder Zach Caron (six saves) at 36:40.

But just as quickly, Seekonk (7-3-1, 6-3-1) re-established its momentum as Matt Ferro (at 44) and Brendan Gouveia (at 52) tallied early in the second half.

Ferro one-timed a right-footed shot off an indirect kick taken from the left side by Paul Hindle, just inside the midfield stripe. Then Gouveia smacked in a direct kick, a right-footed drive from 30 yards out, eluding the wall of four Falcon defenders and tucking the ball just inside the far left post.

"We've been playing good soccer," said Seekonk coach Jeff Creamer. "We've had our moments offensively, scoring goals, but we're still a work in progress."
Seekonk’s goalie Zach Caron, left, blocks a shot by Dighton-Rehoboth’s Keith Rose, right.
Similarly well-taken were Seekonk's initial pair of tallies. Santiago snaked in a loose ball header off the right goal post off of a cross from Gouveia. Then Magina deposited a header into the Falcon goal, finishing off a cross out of the left wing from Adam Ferreira.

The Seekonk central defenders, Casey O'Brien and Hindle, did a strong job of not allowing Rose much room to roam. He had a nice run out of the right corner past three Warrior defenders in the 30th minute and nearly had the tying goal on a slicing shot a minute into the second half.

"That was our No. 1 objective, to not let him (Rose) get many shots," said Creamer. "We tried to put a body on him, t o prevent him from doing anything."

However, the Falcons were facing a three-goal deficit before Jake Soifert had a strong direct kick in the 54th minute, while both Brian Rego and Brendan Vasconcellos had strong shots shortly thereafter. In truth, Caron may have made the save of the match in the seventh minute, handling a long, wind-direct free kick off the toe of Soifert.

That preserved the stalemate and when Ferro scored two minutes after Rose had his potential match-equalizing goal bid just go astray, Seekonk was in control of its own destiny.

The Warriors are off until a match 6 p.m. Wednesday at home at Connolly Field with Fairhaven, while D-R (6-6) visits Bridgewater-Raynham Monday.

Norton 0, Hopkinton 0

NORTON - The Lancers put forth a nice defensive package and created some quality shots on goal, but had to settle for a scoreless stalemate in the Tri-Valley League match. Ben Donovan totaled seven saves to earn his second shutout of the season for Norton (5-3-2).

Chris Lenihan, Justin Iadarella and Dylan Roe were outstanding on the backline for the Lancers, who next visit Ashland Friday.
