FIELD HOCKEY: Bulldogs hand Hornets 1st loss

CANTON - So now there is a tie atop the Hockomock League. So now the Hornets of Mansfield High have an "L" on their tally sheet.

The Canton High field hockey team avenged a 3-1 loss earlier in the season at Mansfield by upstaging the Hornets 3-1 Wednesday. "They beat us to the ball, they came out aggressively," said Mansfield coach Theresa DeGirolamo, whose Hornets fell to 8-1-1 on the season overall, 7-1-1 in the Hockomock League.

Erin Keogh scored the match-tying goal for Mansfield in the fifth minute. Bridgit Davis took a penalty corner, the ball finding its way onto the stick of Meredith Rogazzo, who set up the tally.

Canton had taken the lead in the third minute and regained the lead in the 20th minute. Mansfield created seven penalty corners during the second half, with Jamie Sterling and Davis creating the attack from their midfield perches. "But, we didn't force their goalkeeper to make enough saves," added DeGirolamo.

The Hornets host arch-rival Foxboro Friday. Also in the Hockomock League, the Oliver Ames at Foxboro and Franklin at North Attleboro matches Wednesday were postponed to today due to wet fields. Dighton-Rehoboth 2, Fairhaven 2

FAIRHAVEN - The Falcons surrendered the tying goal to the Blue Devils with two minutes left in the South Coast Conference match, but still managed to secure a point and qualify for the MIAA Tournament. "We were pounding away, the intensity was there," said D-R coach Roberta Cordeiro of scoring a pair of second-half goals.

The Falcons (6-0-4) tied the match at 1-1 on a goal by Sarah Gendron, from Alexa Cowell at 11:56 of the second half. Then D-R took the lead at 20:37 when Jenna Rocha tallied off of a feed from Cowell. "We made a mistake and it cost us," said Cordeiro of Fairhaven scoring its second goal off of an intercepted D-R clear. The Falcons next host Wareham Wednesday.

Seekonk 4, Case 0

SEEKONK - Courtney DeCunha set up three goals as the Warriors (4-5-2) clubbed Case in a South Coast Conference match. DeCunha set up firs- half goals for Seekonk by Heidi St. Laurent (at 6:29) and by Danielle Nolette (at 27:57).

Then DeCunha set up Allison Whitelaw for the third Warrior goal with 11:39 left. Cassie Karns closed out the Seekonk scoring, finishing off a Corrine Mariano pass at 23:44. Seekonk outshot Case by a 16-4 margin and had a 14-4 edge in penalty corners. Seekonk visits Apponequet Friday.
