GIRLS' SOCCER: Seekonk, D-R go for naught
Thursday, October 8, 2009 2:20 AM EDT
SEEKONK - Krista Chauvin stonewalled Dighton-Rehoboth time and time again, the Seekonk High senior goalkeeper making several goal-saving stops to preserve a scoreless tie for the Warriors in the South Coast Conference match.
"I'm at a loss, we're just not able to finish," said D-R coach Jeff White, whose Falcons unleashed 20 shots, 12 on target at Chauvin. Meanwhile, Haley Terry, the Falcon goalie, had to make just four saves. Sarah Kenney, Alyssa DaSilva and Danielle Flores spurred on the D-R attack. D-R (7-3-2) is off until a match at home Oct. 16 against Fairhaven, while Seekonk resumes action Wednesday at Fairhaven.
Canton 1, Mansfield 0
CANTON - The Hornets couldn't find the net against Canton, falling 1-0 in a tight Hockomock League match.
The game was scoreless until 33 minutes into the first half when a Canton striker hit a great shot from just outside the 18-yard line, grazing the crossbar and finding the goal as the Bulldogs took a lead they would not relinquish.
Canton had 15 shots to Mansfield's seven. Hornet goalkeeper Jackie McPherson made 10 saves in net, while the defensive line of Kristen McDonagh, Erin Bruno, Marissa Smith and Allie Dorval played well to keep the game close.
Mansfield, 3-5-1, takes on cross-town rival Foxboro at home on Friday.
Franklin 4, North Attleboro 1
NORTH ATTLEBORO - Freshman Christy Kirshey scored a pair of goals and assisted on another as the Panthers converted their scoring chances into a Hockomock League victory over North Attleboro. OA, which held a 2-1 halftime lead, scored second-half goals at the 48th and 53rd minutes.
Ashley Chretien tallied the lone Rocketeer goal, banging in a rebound of a drive by Jill Haney which banged off the Panther goalpost. North had an 11-9 advantage in shots and for the most part, played on even terms with Franklin. North (3-5-2) visits Oliver Ames Friday.
Hopkinton 1, Norton 0
HOPKINTON - The Lancers created enough offense and shots (seven), but couldn't find the back of the net in losing the Tri-Valley League match. Hopkinton took the lead in the 22nd minute of play off of a corner kick and maintained that one-goal margin.
Kristin MacGray, Meg Elliott, Cassie Iagatta and Paige Almeida did a nice job for Norton through the midfield at winning balls and creating an attack.
Oliver Ames 3, Foxboro 1
FOXBORO - The Tigers scored a trio of first-half goals, including the go-ahead tally at the 12-minute mark to beat Foxboro in the Hockomock League match. "We came out flat," said Foxboro coach Caitlin Annicelli, whose Warriors didn't get on the scoreboard until the 64th minute when Nalina Valaydon scored. The Warriors (6-3-1) visit Mansfield Friday.
