NORTH ATTLEBORO - Thirteen students who created pictures plugging electrical safety have been selected as the winners in North Attleboro Electric's 14th annual calendar contest.

The 13 drawings - one for each month and one for the front cover - will be featured in the department's 2010 calendar, which will be available at locations throughout town for free in mid-December.

The winners were chosen from 143 entries received from schools throughout the district.

Contest winners drew pictures reflecting the theme of outdoor electrical safety.

"My picture is when the electric workers cut down some of the branches in trees so they don't touch the power lines in the winter," said Riley Bolton, a fourth-grader at Amvet School.
"My picture is meant to show you shouldn't fly kites, model airplanes or balloons near power lines," said Emily Chiasson, a fourth-grader at Roosevelt School.

"My picture shows a power line that fell from its pole, hitting the street and sparks are coming out," said Caitlin Parlon, a fourth-grade student at Martin School. "That can be really dangerous."

"My picture shows a lifeguard when it is thundering and lightning because it's not safe to swim in the thunder and lightning," said Aliyah Weintraub, a third-grader at Falls School.

The students received proclamations from state Rep. Betty Poirier, R-North Attleboro, and a certificate of recognition from the board of selectmen.

Besides Bolton, Chiasson, Parlon and Weintraub, calendar contest winners are: Elena Digan, a fourth-grader at Allen Avenue School; Julia Feid, a third-grader at Falls School; Mimi Gray, a fourth-grader at Amvet Boulevard School; Emily Hopkins, a fourth-grader at Community School; Anna Kuzmicheva, a third-grader at Roosevelt Avenue School; Alexandra Moura, a third-grader at Saint Mary's-Sacred Heart School; Kyle Murray, a third-grader at Roosevelt Avenue School; Tara Nair, a third-grader at Allen Avenue School; and Allie Shiers, a third-grader at Roosevelt Avenue School.
