Top Headlines Mark Haynes, who qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award, by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all exams and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of the exams. Two decades of riding The Greenlock Therapeutic Riding Center in Rehoboth will celebrate its 20th year of using horse-back riding and equine-related activities to treat children and adults with a wide range of disabilities from multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy to autism and speech delays on Saturday. The event will take place at the Renaissance Hotel in Providence at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $150 each, and will include cocktails and dinner. The theme for the 20th year gala celebration is Diamonds and Denim, and the evening's master of ceremonies will be Tony Petrarca of the Channel 12 News Team. There will be a silent as well as a live auction. All proceeds go to Greenlock where less than half of the cost of services is provided by private and insurance fees. Raising cancer awareness The Center at Five Bridge Inn will host its inaugural open house, a breast cancer awareness/education day and fundraiser, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. All proceeds will benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation. There will also be an "Alex's Lemonade Stand" for childhood cancer and two donation spin classes to benefit LiveStrong. Church to mark 25 years Christian Life Church of Rehoboth will mark its 25th anniversary with an evening at the Hillside Country Club featuring Pastor Mike Servello of Mount Zion Ministries in Utica, N.Y. There will be a dinner at 7 p.m., preceded by a hospitality hour from 6 to 7. Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for children. Ghost stories The Blanding Public Library will hold ghost stories in the cemetery, an annual guided tour/walk through Rehoboth's historical Village Cemetery on Bay State Road, at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1. Beary Fun Afternoon - This fall project will offer kids creative fun with paper and stamping at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19. The program for children in kindergarten through grade 4. Space is limited with preference to Rehoboth residents. Story and craft time, a program of stories and related crafts for children 3 through kindergarten, will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesdays and 2 p.m. Thursdays from Oct. 21 to Nov. 19. Tot time, a 20- to 30-minute program for children under 3 combines books, songs and related activities. The program will take place at 10 a.m. beginning Tuesday, Oct. 20 and then held Nov. 3, 17 and Dec. 1. Meeting set on cable Selectmen will hold a public meeting at 7:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19 at the council on aging to hear comments from the public about Rehoboth's Public Access Corporation, known as RePAC. The board recently received a petition with more than 200 signatures asking them to look into the situation. Robert Brawley and Dighton-Rehoboth Regional School Committee Chairman David Katseff also have questioned the cable access company's policies. Issues that have been raised include how RePAC responds to public inquiries and whether it's airing its own political agenda. Selectmen Chairman Frederick "Skip" Vadnais said RePAC isn't expected to respond to residents' concerns at this meeting, but added they want to hear the public's concerns, good and bad. The public session will take place during the regular meeting of the board of selectmen. Seasonal flu clinic Oct. 17 The Rehoboth Board of Health will sponsor a seasonal flu clinic for residents 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Beckwith Middle School. Catch Poetry in the Village Susan Mahan will be featured at Poetry in the Village on Oct. 21 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A South Boston native, Susan (O'Donnell) Mahan has been an editor for the South Boston Literary Gazette since 2002. She has published three chapbooks, "Paris Awaits," "In The Wilderness of Grief" and "Missing Mum" and is working on a fourth, "World View." She also has been published in numerous publications and anthologies. Poetry in the Village takes place at Blanding Library, Goff Memorial Hall, 124 Bay State Road. Firefighters to serve chicken The Station 3 Fire Association will hold its annual drive-through chicken barbecue on Sunday, Oct. 25. Food can be picked up between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tickets are $10 and include a barbecue half-chicken, mashed potatoes, squash, cole slaw, cranberry sauce and pie. Frightful fun on tap After cooking dinner, the fun is just getting started for Rehoboth's firefighters, whose anual Halloween party for children takes place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31 at Stations 2 and 3. The free event includes games, candy, costume contest, a balloon stomp and refreshments. Station 2 is on Tremont Street. Toys for Tots The Rehoboth Helping Hands Project is once again organizing its annual Holiday Toys for Tots campaign and will be accepting toys, books and other holiday gifts for Rehoboth children in need through Nov. 22. The group prefers unwrapped toys, unless you call ahead and get an item from Helping Hands Director Steve Martin. Helping Hands also will be organizing its Blizzard of Giving program where Christmas lists from needy children in town are collected and posted at the schools and Rehoboth Post Office. People can then buy the item, gift wrap it and return it for distribution. The list of holiday gift items for donation will be posted by the end of October. Register for fall town meeting The fall special town meeting will be held Monday, Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m. at Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School. If a second night is needed, it will be held the following Monday, Nov. 2. The town clerk's office will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today (Friday, Oct. 16), which is the last date to register to vote for those residents who have not registered and who wish to be eligible to vote at the special town meeting. Anyone who will be 18 years of age by Oct. 26 may register. Girl Scout volunteers sought Rehoboth and Seekonk Girl Scouts are looking for adult volunteers and girls in kindergarten through grade 12. They will have their annual Bring a Friend Costume Dance from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Rehoboth Congregational Church's Fellowship Hall. Senior citizen club events The regular meetings of the Rehoboth Senior Citizens Club's regular meetings are held at 1:30 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of the month at the Rehoboth Senior Center at 55 Bay State Road. Upcoming trips will include: Tuesday Oct. 20, a day trip to Foxwoods at a cost of $19 each including driver's tip, free dinner buffet and $5 toward Keno. Three-day trip to Atlantic City, Nov. 15-17 at a cost is $265, based on double occupancy. Trip includes bus transportation, driver's tip, two dinner buffets, $20 on arrival, a $15 food coupon, and a free show. Gambling session - Rehoboth Triad, in conjunction with the Taunton Triad and the Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling is offering a presentation for seniors on compulsive gambling at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21. Try zumba - A weekly zumba gold class will be held at 10:15 a.m. Fridays. The class is 45 minutes and is taught by an instructor certified in zumba dance. The class is geared toward seniors, and beginners are welcome. Two new computer classes - A one-on-one beginner computer class takes place weekly at 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Registration is required. A basic computer class will be held weekly at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. This class will be in a group. The senior center's resident computer whiz, Aaron Tarver, will answer questions. Nurse to visit - Rehoboth Town Nurse, Lynn Allienello will be at the Rehoboth Council on Aging every other month on Mondays from 10 to 11 a.m. Meals on Wheels drivers needed - Drivers with a couple of free hours once or twice a week who enjoy visiting homebound seniors are needed; mileage is reimbursed. Wanabee weight meeting - The group meets at no cost on Mondays at 11:30 a.m. Tai chi at 9 a.m. on Tuesdays. The cost is $3. Line dancing at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays. The cost is $2. Balancing exercise and upper cardio at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The class is free. Reiki class every other Thursday at 10 a.m. Cost is $15 for a 30-minute session. Royal Travelers' Presentation - Learn about trips to New York, the Rockies or Florida with Don Coulombe of Royal Travlers' Vacations at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21. A senior citizens club craft fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. Support food pantry The Rehoboth Helping Hands Food Pantry is a tax-exempt organization as part of the Shaw's Community Rewards Program, by where Shaw's donates a portion of purchases made by those who enroll to the food pantry.
