FIELD HOCKEY: D-R dropped in tourney tune-up

SOMERSET - Two of the premier field hockey teams in the Commonwealth went at it tooth and nail for the second straight day and once again the Somerset High Blue Raiders didn't lose to Dighton-Rehoboth.

Scoring a goal on a breakaway bid in the 16th minute of the second half, the EAC champion Blue Raiders took a 1-0 victory over the South Coast Conference runnerup Falcons Saturday.

Somserset and D-R had battled to a 0-0 standoff Friday "and this was the same, a high intensity match," said D-R coach Roberta Cordeiro. Falcon goalie Brittany Noons was often spectacular, making seven saves, including a denial of a Somerset penalty stroke in the second half.

Jenna Rocha, Daryn Copeland, Haley Jackson and Courtney Ulak were brilliant in the give-and-go affair, the runs between the tops of the circle. D-R had a slight 8-7 advantage in shots, while Somerset had a slight 10-8 edge in penalty corners.

The Falcons will take an 8-1-7 record into the MIAA Tournament which gets underway next week.
