CROSS COUNTRY: Seekonk dominates

MARION - For two straight seasons now, there are no finer cross country runners in the South Coast Conference than Seekonk High senior John Gregorek and Seekonk High junior Jen Salit.

For that matter, there's no better cross country teams in the SCC than the defending champion Warriors, who claimed crowns once again Saturday at Washburn Park.

With Gregorek claiming first place over the 3.1 mile course at 15:47, winning by 19 seconds over Old Rochester Regional's Dana Dourdeville, the Seekonk High boys' totaled 28 points to win the team title by 32 points over arch-rival Dighton-Rehoboth.

With Salit taking first place over the same course at 19:34, winning by 57 seconds over teammate Emily Gagliardi, the Seekonk High girls' team totaled 22 points, claiming a 29-point margin of victory over the host Bulldogs of ORR.

"It was an awesome day, we had a ton of PR's (personal best times)," said Seekonk coach Eli Mello, whose Warrior teams will be among the favorites at the MIAA Class D Championship Meet at Franklin Park in Boston on Nov. 14. The Warrior boys' team received a third place finish from junior Nathan Larimer, while juniors Cody Archambault and Ryan Brown, along with senior Ken Cabral formed a 7-8-9 pack, finishing within 12 seconds of each other. "That was great, to be that close," added Mello of Seekonk blocking out D-R's challenge.

Both Gregorek and Salit ran their own races, running at championship paces, pulling away from the packs at the two-mile marks.

For the Seekonk girls' team, fourth place finisher Alyssa Taylor clocked a personal best time by a minute, while 10th place finisher Julia Spencer was running just her second race after having recovered from shin splints. Senior Lindsay Frazier of Dighton-Rehoboth was the Falcons' first finisher, taking seventh place at 22:25, nearly three minutes behind Salit.

Junior Colin Hoye was DIGHTON-REHOBOTH's top runner, taking fourth place, while Jake Medeiros was two places and seven seconds behind, the Falcons taking second place overall. Impressively, Eric Thompson, a freshman, took 13th place and was the first rookie to finish, while junior Mason Saleeba took second place in the boys' junior varsity race at 18:32.

The Seekonk High boys' junior varsity team claimed their divisional title as well with Zach Zimmerman winning the race at 18:28, followed by four teammates as top 10 finishers - Tony Sousa (third, 18:35), Mike Mullen (fourth, 19:06), Dan Mendes (sixth, 19:08) and Ben Gaudreau (10th, 19:40).
