VOLLEYBALL: Sweet 16 for North

NORTH ATTLEBORO - The Rocketeers of North Attleboro High rallied from early deficits in both the first and second games to turn back Attleboro High 3-0 on the volleyball court Monday, prevailing 25-14, 25-15, 25-21.

The MIAA Division 1 Tournament-bound Rocketeers completed the regular season at 16-2 overall. Kelsey Weymouth totaled 16 service points with nine kills and nine assists, while senior captain Rachel Gould totaled eight digs and eight service points.

North overcame a 6-5 deficit in the first game as Weymouth accounted for 10 straight service points. In the second game, North faced a 6-3 deficit before Weymouth totaled six straight service points with two aces. Then Tori Morris added seven straight service points to put the Rocketeers in control.

Jen McBrine (12 assists) and Morris (10 service points, five kills) also figured significantly for North.

Mansfield 3, Norton 0 NORTON - They're in.

In a win-or-go-home match for the Hornets, Mansfield delivered with a fairly-convincing sweep of non-league Norton, winning by scores of 26-24, 25-15 and 25-16.

"With five matches left we had to win three," said first-year MHS coach Melissa Sursani . "We beat Sharon and then the big one was Senior Night when we beat Franklin, a team we had lost to in three the first time around. We tried to keep the momentum up but lost to North and OA and needed to win this one. The seniors really came through."

The Lancers qualified for the postseason with 10-10 record.

Senior captains Chelsea Almeida and Mollie Williams provided exemplary leadership for the Hornets. Statistically, Rose Aldo had a strong game with six aces and 11 digs, not to mention a string of 14-straight service points to help Mansfield lock up Game 2. Michelle Ganter-Fichera had five kills and six blocks.

"It had been six years since we made it (to the tournament), so that was our focus, especially for the last five games, making it was our big picture," added Melissa Sursani.
