BOYS SOCCER: Falcons will have to wait to clinch

REHOBOTH - The once-beaten Bishop Feehan High boys' soccer team might not have the luster, nor the luminaries and neither the accolades of others heading into the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional Tournament. All the Shamrocks have is the earned respect of their foes.

The Shamrocks did it again Monday, scoring twice within a five-minute span midway through the second half to notch their ninth victory of the season and postpone the playoff aspirations of the Falcons of Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High.

Kyle Pimental scored twice, scoring the match-winner at 15 and setting up Alex Johnson for a third Bishop Feehan score in a well-earned, hard-earned, feisty 3-0 decision over D-R at the Bliss Soccer Complex.

"We played Walpole (a 1-1 tie) the other day and it was the same, they're a physical team and there was the same intensity," surmised Shamrock skipper Mike Pariseau as Bishop Feehan responded to the Falcons as they did with the Rebels.

As a result, D-R (9-9-1) needs at least one point in its final match of the regular season, a South Coast Conference contest today at Bourne, in order to advance into the MIAA Division 1 South Tournament.
"They (Bishop Feehan) deserved to win," D-R coach Steve Kulpa praised the Shamrocks, despite an all-out attack by senior striker Keith Rose and several good, but not superb scoring chances at Shamrock goalie Ricky Blythe.

With strong play out of the backline from Oliver Baublis, with an attacking mindset from Anthony Cichetti and the sleight, deft penalty box skills of Pimental, Bishop Feehan (9-1-7) was able to withstand D-R's pressure and prevail.

Pimental put Feehan into the lead when he nudged in a rebound of a shot-cross out of the right wing by Cichetti. A pair of corner kicks by Baublis (one which produced a goal, only to be nullified by an offside infraction) and his indirect kick were the Shamrocks' other good scoring bids.

Pimental took some of the starch out of D-R, scoring the second Feehan goal at 59:16, being parked at the right doorstep of the D-R goal and finishing off a cross out of the left wing from Cichetti. Then at 24:40, a cross from Matt Boland was touched by Pimental and onto the foot of Johnson, who didn't need an invitation to score.

Prior to that second Feehan goal, Rose belted a drive to the top left corner of the net which Blythe's right hand knocked away at 44; Nick Rosa unleashed a Falcon drive wide left at 46; and Brendan Vasconcellos had a long, low drive gathered in by the Feehan goalie at 54.

North Attleboro 2, Mansfield 0

MANSFIELD - The Rocketeers did it, sweeping the Hockomock League season series from Mansfield and qualifying for the MIAA Division 1 Tournament. On the strength of a pair of first half goals from Toby Berkowitz and Josh Ocel within three minutes of each other, the Rocketeers ended a scoring drought, beat the Hornets for a second time and advanced into post-season competition.

"After we scored that first goal it brought out confidence back," said North coach Steve Santos, whose Rocketeers concluded the regular season campaign at 7-6-5, while the Hornets went to the sidelines with a 6-10-2 slate.

Ever-present midfielder Alex Ventola stopped a Mansfield clearance and boomed the ball back into the attacking zone, where Berkowitz won a foot chase for the loose ball, scoring at 16:17. Three minutes later, Berkowitz created a much-sought two-goal margin for North, sending a cross off the wing that Ocel, a freshman, finished off.

The Hornets started strongly, pressuring North through the first 12 minutes, but Rocketeer central defender Tristan Richardson, Connor Grealish and Ventola began neutralizing Mansfield's advancements.
Chris McKearney had six saves in goal for the shutout.

Seekonk 4, Case 0

SWANSEA - Aris Santiago scored twice, including the match-winner in the seventh minute of the South Coast Conference contest as Seekonk routed the Cardinals. "It was very frustrating because we were throwing all kinds of shots (35 overall) at them," said Seekonk coach Jeff Creamer, whose Warriors' one-goal lead was all that was on the scoreboard for nearly 60 minutes.

Santiago gave Seekonk the lead off of a corner kick taken by Brendan Gouveia and he scored again, giving the Warriors' a breath of relief, a 20-yard drive in the 58th minute. Then Kunakorn Wirassamme produced another pair of Seekonk goals within a two-minute span.

Wirassamme set up Gouveia for a goal in the 71st minute and then scored himself on a rugged rush inside the penalty box area at 73. Zach Caron, the Seekonk goalie, had to make just one save for the shutout. Seekonk (9-5-2 in the SCC) enters the MIAA Division 3 South Tournament with an 11-5-2 slate.

Sharon 2, Foxboro 0

SHARON - Scoring twice during the second half of play, the Sharon Eagles upended Foxboro in the Warriors' season finale. Foxboro had a flurry of first half scoring chances, most created by Sawyer Fleck and Ed Carroll. Foxboro finished the season with a 5-10-3 record.

Canton 1, King Philip 1

WRENTHAM - A quality tie for the Warriors, much to the chagrin of Oliver Ames.

King Philip pushed once-beaten and Hockomock League-leading Canton to the brink and came away with the one point in its season finale. However, had the Warriors pulled the upset and gotten the win, Oliver Ames would have earned a share of the league title.

A left-footed boot by Matt Keys opened the scoring for KP in the 43rd minute but Canton answered four minutes later after a mad scramble following a corner.

"On paper they probably should have taken us, but our guys really battled," said KP coach Kip Lewis.

KP ended up 10-4-2 in the Hockomock, 10-5-3 overall.

Playing well Monday were Austin Brais, who shut down Canton's leading scorer Igor Peron. Mike Perry and Dan Bingel also played well while goalie Tyler Marra had another solid game.
