TAUNTON - Police Monday arrested a Taunton man for the murder of a Route 44 gas station attendant Sunday night.
Steven Foster, 37, of 68 Broadway, has been charged with the murder of Hegazy Sayed, 45, also of Taunton, Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter and acting Police Chief John Reardon announced Monday.
Foster apparently entered Planet Petroleum at 274 Winthrop St. about 10 p.m. Sunday and attempted to rob Sayed, police said.
Foster was charged after being questioned at the Taunton Police Station Monday afternoon. He is charged with murder, armed robbery, possession of a stolen firearm and witness intimidation, and may face more charges as the investigation progresses, police said.
Sayed was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Gregg Miliote, a spokesman for Sutter. Taunton police received a 911 call about 10:05 p.m. from a customer who found the clerk shot behind the counter, Miliote said.
The suspect was to be arraigned Tuesday morning in Taunton District Court.
Taunton police and the State Police unit assigned to the district attorney are investigating the homicide.
