WRENTHAM - For the first time in recent memory, and with hopes of bringing in much-needed revenue, the town is holding an auction of property on which extended back taxes are owed.A total of 13 residential parcels in Tax Title go up for auction Thursday. The auction starts at 6 p.m., with registration beginning at 5 p.m. in the community meeting room of the Fiske Public Library off Randall Road. "Conservatively, we are hoping about $250,000," Town Administrator Jack McFeeley said of the town's anticipated take. Many lots are narrow and would only interest abutters and neighbors, but local officials are hoping to bring in $100,000 to $200,000 from a parcel on Green Street. Aggregate Industries abuts the property, and is interested in acquiring the land for a buffer for its asphalt business. "We've got some interest in that. That is the big ticket item," McFeeley said. "There is a house that is livable on it that might have to be fixed up. It's a reasonable-size lot." If that lot goes for $200,000, the auction could bring in about $350,000, he noted. Other properties are located on Taunton, East, Hancock and Madison streets, and Sumner Perry Drive. Also, three are off Forest Grove Avenue, and two each are on Beach and Kayshaw streets. "We have gotten a lot of interest. We have received inquires for all of the properties, particularly the Green Street property," McFeeley said. "We are hoping to get good competition." "We're doing this to raise revenue," Selectman Ed Goddard said. Selectman Stephen Langley added: "It allows some infusion of cash we desperately need." Initially, town officials were looking at about 30 parcels and hoping to garner about $500,000, but the list was whittled down for various reasons by selectmen with the oversight of Finance Director Karen Jelloe. The assessor's office came up with updated appraisals. A $5,000 deposit per property is required, and properties are being sold "as is." The auction is being conducted by Daniel J. Flynn and Co. auctioneers of Quincy. For more information, visit www.FlynnAuctions.com or call 617-479-9000.
