ATTLEBORO - Prosecutors will seek a grand jury indictment for a 60-year-old North Attleboro man charged with severely beating his 65-year-old girlfriend last month.
If a grand jury decides to indict Lawrence J. Poirier, the case would be transferred to New Bedford Superior Court for trial.
A probable cause hearing was scheduled Thursday in Attleboro District Court. But the hearing was canceled after lawyers for both sides told Judge James Sullivan that the case was forwarded to the grand jury.
Poirier allegedly beat Carol Smith Oct. 2 at her Circle Court apartment in North Attleboro so severely that she was hospitalized for several days with a serious head injury, a broken nose and cuts and bruises to other parts of her body.
Poirier is being held in jail without bail as a dangerous person.
He has pleaded innocent to several felony charges including assault with intent to kill, aggravated assault and battery, assault by means of a dangerous weapon and intimidating a witness. |
