KIRBY: A new look for Page 1
Top Headlines The top part of the front page carrying our name - newspapers call it the "mast" - has been redesigned. For the past few years, we've put The Sun Chronicle on two lines. It was a different way to place "teasers" - small items promoting stories or other attractions inside the paper - near the top of the front page. Nearly all newspapers try to use this prime space on the top half of the front page - "above the fold," as we say - to attract potential buyers at the newsstand. We found few other newspapers that placed their name on two lines, and we hoped that the space to the right of the mast would be a place readers would look for teasers. After a few years, however, I think the uniqueness wore off. And the one thing you don't want with teasers is for them to become "wallpaper" - something that looks good at first, but that you see so often that you don't even notice them any more. That's why we decided to put The Sun Chronicle back on one line, and to come up with several new options to promote what's inside the newspaper. Managing Editor Craig Borges, Assistant Managing Editor for News Jessica Kosowski and Graphics Supervisor Michael Garlick created several alternatives. Some will use photos or other "artwork." Some will just use different color schemes. The idea is to grab potential readers' attention when they're in the impulse-buying stage at a store. We have a lot of good stuff inside the paper. We want to be able to tell you about them. And we hope this is another way to tell you about it. In addition, you'll be seeing a few other changes. The masts on the other section fronts - City & Town and Sports, for instance - have been redesigned. There's a different look to what we call "pullouts," the larger bolder type meant to bring emphasis to a quote. Headlines will now be centered. We'll use more boxes on section to promote what's inside. None of these involve a drastic change. Instead, they're part of an evolution of The Sun Chronicle's design, an attempt to make the paper easier and friendlier to read. We hope you'll like it. Another change Starting next week, we'll make another change, this one inside our Sunday Living Well section. The page will be called "Nostalgia," and it will be a weekly look back in time at the Attleboro area. Tom McAvoy, who writes a popular reminisce column about Attleboro, will shift to the Nostalgia page. There will be a look back at what was making news 50 and 25 years ago. And we'll be expanding our popular Remember When photos, snapshots of the Attleboro area from the distant and not-so-distant past. Jessica is in charge of this section, and I'm sure she'd appreciate contributions, particularly old photos. Let me know what you think of these changes by contacting me at the phone number or e-mail address below. And keep reading. MIKE KIRBY is editor of The Sun Chronicle.
