ATTLEBORO -One week from today, concerned citizens and groups from the area will take part in a worldwide effort entitled Climate Action Day to help protect Mother Earth.
Locally, the effort on Saturday, Oct. 24, will include an Earth-Friendly Fair and Climate Action Rally from 1 to 4 p.m. at Balfour Riverwalk Park, with some local off-site activities, and hundreds of other events happening around the world.
The local effort has been organized by a coalition headed by city resident Charles Adler, who says eight area religious groups have joined the band wagon to support the effort. To date those groups include:
Attleboro
Second Congregational Church, Murray Unitarian Universalist Church, St. John the Evangelist Church, First Baptist Church and the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette.
North Attleboro
Central Congregational Church in the town's Attleboro Falls section and the First United Methodist Church.
Plainville
Plainville United Methodist Church.
"As the evidence for climate change mounts, many religious denominations have adopted Earth stewardship as an integral part of their missions, out of a conviction that communities of faith have a special responsibility to care for the Earth," Adler said.
For their participation, Adler says the eight local congregations will be ringing their bells to signal the importance of reducing carbon in Earth's atmosphere from the current 387 parts per million to 350 parts per million, which scientists tell us is the safe level for avoiding disastrous climate change."
