NORTH ATTLEBORO - An elderly couple rescued from a smoky kitchen fire in their home were listed in serious condition Tuesday at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro.
Donald and Magdeline Benoit became disoriented after smoke filled their home at 23 Moran St. around 5:20 p.m. Monday, and suffered severe smoke inhalation, fire officials said.
Fire Chief Peter Lamb said the fire was accidental, and was caused by combustible material that was too close to the stove. The fire was extinguished quickly and was confined to the stove area, but smoke filled the home, firefighters said.
The couple called 911, but were unable to get out of the house because of low visibility due to the smoke. Firefighters had to force their way into the house and rescue the couple because the home was locked.
