NORTH ATTLEBORO - The Borders Express in Emerald Square mall will be closing its books for good after the holidays.
The closing is part of the Border's Group plans to shut down almost 200 stores across the country. Border's Group said the decision to is part of its strategy to become a smaller, more profitable mall chain during the 2010 fiscal year.
Five Waldenbooks and Borders Express stores are set to close in Massachusetts, including the Waldenbooks shops in Brockton's Westgate Mall, Danvers' Liberty Tree Mall, Marlboro's Solomon Pond Mall and Springfield's Eastfield Mall.
While those stores are currently all on the list, Borders Group said the list could change before the stores close in January.
Those closures will leave Borders Group with about 130 stores in malls across the country.
With the store closings in January, approximately 1,500 positions - the majority of which are part-time jobs - will be eliminated.
All stores will honor Borders and Waldenbooks gift cards until they close.
