Grab lunch, movie at Norton VFW Post




The Norton Women of Today will host a free senior citizen luncheon and movie event at noon Saturday, Nov. 14 at the Norton VFW Post on Summer Street, off of Route 140. The afternoon will feature popular songs of the 1950's and the movie "High Society," starring Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong. Reservations can be made through Nov. 11 by sending an e-mail to nortonwomen@yahoo.com. There also will be a signup sheet located at the Norton Senior Center and the Community Center on the bulletin board. Seats are limited, so reservations are required.

Bid on meat

The Norton American Legion Auxiliary will host a meat raffle at 7:30 p.m. Friday at 85 East Main St. The raffle will consist of 10 raffles. The Sons of the American Legion will have food available for purchase. This event is open to the public. For more information, call 508-285-3835.

Visit Pinecroft School

The Pinecroft School will have an open house and student art show from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8. All are invited to stop in and enjoy light refreshments, meet the teachers, and talk with current, prospective and alumni families. Art is an integral part of the Pinecroft curriculum and recent student works will be on display. The Pinecroft School is at 33 Pine St., at the edge of the Wheaton College campus. Upcoming events at the Norton Public Library include:

Celebrate Family Literacy Month with the Junior Friends and Young Adults of the library at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10. Students in grades K-3 and their caregivers are invited to participate in literacy games, book-making and other activities. Admission is free.

The library will be closed Nov. 11 in honor of Veterans Day.

The library will close at 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24 and at 5 p.m. on New Year's Eve, Dec. 31. All other hours will remain the same during the holidays: Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10 to 1 p.m.

The library will host an ivy and bean day at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12. There will be activities and crafts. Admission is free. Register at the library.

"Diary of a Spider" and insect stories, a drop-in family storytime, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 16. There will be spider and bug crafts and other spider activities. Admission is free.

A drop-in video game program for grades 4 and up will run from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17. Admission is free to this event, which is sponsored by the Junior Friends and Young Adults of the library.

A drop-in family storytime with the MOMS Club of Norton will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18. There will be Thanksgiving songs, stories and crafts. Admission is free.

The Norton Cultural Council will fund a program for adults at the library at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19. Age-appropriate homeschoolers are also invited to attend. Richard Clark will offer a look at the life and work of America's foremost humorist, Mark Twain. The library will show a PG animated movie about dinosaurs at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23. Admission is free.

The library will host a MOMS Club open house for families with young children at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30. Cindy Tuminelli will provide music.

The library will show a PG film about a boy wizard at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17. Admission is free.

The Friends of the Library have lent support to the library throughout the financial crisis by purchasing best-sellers, books on CD, museum passes and a new collection of electronic games. The Friends continue to sponsor programs for both children and adults throughout the year.

Nine Lives sets craft fair

The Nine Lives of Norton Feline Rescue Shelter will sponsor a craft fair and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28 at the Unitarian Church, at the corner of Taunton Avenue (Route 140) and West Main Street (Route 123). Visit New Testament

The New Testament Christian School will hold an open house for interested students and families from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, at 1 New Taunton Ave. New Testament is a pre-kindergarten through grade 12 co-educational Christian day school that has served area families for nearly 40 years. Congratulations to Norton resident Jennifer Thomas, who graduated from Boston University recently.

Thomas received her master's degree in actuarial science.

They shoot turkeys ...

American Legion Post 222, 85 East Main St., will host a turkey shoot at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21. The raffle will consist of 10 individual turkey baskets and a door prize. For more information, call 508-285-3835.

'Beyond America the Beautiful'

The Norton Institute for Continuing Education will hold a free lecture in November. "Katharine Lee Bates: Beyond America the Beautiful" will run from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19. This lecture/PowerPoint presentation by Leonard Miele, a retired Brockton High School English teacher, will delve into the early Cape Cod years of Katharine Lee Bates and her career as an English professor at Wellesley College. Both lectures, free and open to the public, are co-sponsored by and will be held at the Norton Public Library. No RSVP is necessary. The following events are happening at Epoch of Norton:

Epoch seeks local artists wishing to display their artwork. The community regularly showcases local artists' work in its gallery and would like to feature new talent throughout the year. For more information, contact Gloria O'Brien at 508-285-3355.

Epoch Assisted Living of Norton will hold a holiday bazaar from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21. Proceeds will benefit the senior living community's resident council to support future resident activities, including charitable donations. Church reaches out to residents

Trinitarian Congregational Church has a group to provide the community of Norton a place for persons recently unemployed or people seeking better employment a place to meet. The group is open to all, including employers seeking employees. This is an open environment to share and exchange employment information, learn and practice interview techniques, resume reviews, networking and general support for people seeking employment in these difficult times.
