Top Headlines Alfred LeMaistre, 81 ATTLEBORO - Attleboro Fire Department retired Deputy Fire Chief Alfred J. LeMaistre died peacefully at his home with his family by his side on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009. Alfred was born in New Bedford on July 27, 1928, the son of Joseph and Marie (Bellavance). A longtime resident of Attleboro, he started on the Attleboro Fire Department in January of 1951 and was promoted to the position of deputy chief in 1978. During his distinguished career, he participated in major fires at the Interstate Car Barn and Thompson Chemical. In his role as deputy chief, he served as the departmental maintenance manager, and was the training officer for the current Fire Chief Ronald Churchill, who commented that Al was the "real deal" and will be missed. Alfred retired from the department in 1982, which allowed him to pursue his lifelong love of golf, music, and travel. Prior to entering the fire service, Al served in the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific from 1945 and was honorably discharged as a private first class in 1947. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Lydia (Cocker), and his children: David and his wife Maureen of Naperville, Ill., Debra Sullivan and her husband Albert of Attleboro, Diane Little and her husband Steve of Cliff Island, Maine, Donna Russakoff and her husband Andy of Skowhegan, Maine, and James Brassard and wife Euda of South Attleboro. Alfred is also survived by his grandchildren Stevan, Kerri, Michael, Scott, Jason, Leah and Amy, and nine great-grandchildren: Xoe, Ryan, Annabelle, Benjamin, Ethan, Coltin, Eleanor, Zachary and Arwen. He also leaves numerous friends, nieces and nephews, and special sister-in-law Harriet LeMaistre and grandnephews Jimmy and Matt Brassard. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Marie, and his brother, Leo. As the ultimate family man, most of all Al loved being with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He took great pride in their many accomplishments, both large and small. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a celebration of his life on Saturday, Nov. 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Attleboro Elks Lodge, South Main Street, Attleboro. MacCaffrie, 65, of Mansfield, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009 in the presence of his loving family at the Tippett Home in Needham. He was the beloved husband of Rosalie M. (Bombardier) MacCaffrie, to whom he was married on June 21, 1969. Born in Brockton, Mass. on Oct. 1, 1944, he was a loving son of Barbara H. (Yeaton) MacCaffrie of Norton and the late John K. MacCaffrie. Steve spent his early childhood living in Brockton, and at age 10 his family moved to Norton, where he grew up and was a 1962 graduate of Norton High School. He furthered his studies to become a graduate of the Wentworth Institute of Technology, receiving his degree in structural engineering. Steve was a highly decorated veteran of the Vietnam War. He faithfully served his country in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1968 as a Seabee builder and engineer. He was honorably discharged from the service on Feb. 10, 1972. For the past seven years, Mr. MacCaffrie was employed as a construction supervisor for the Metric Construction Co. in Boston and had also worked for FBS Event Management & Security in the Boston-Providence area, a job he held with great passion for the past 20 years. After moving to Mansfield 37 years ago, Steve became quite active in town affairs. He served the community as a member of the Mansfield Building Committee for 14 years and was active in town government by serving on numerous other committees. From 2002-2005, he was a member and past chairman of the board of selectmen and the municipal light commissioners. A former active member of the Norton Fire Department Rescue, he loyally served for 14 years at Station 3. Mr. MacCaffrie was also active in Boy Scouts, serving as troop leader and troop chairman of Troop 49 in Norton, where he obtained the rank of Life Scout. Steve was a life member of NSVA Island X-1 in Davisville, R.I., where he also served on the board of directors for the Seabee Museum and Memorial Park. He was a life member of MCB 133 Association and was a member of the VNES. A communicant of St. Mary's Church in Mansfield, he had also assisted with the church collections. Steve treasured the times spent with his adoring family. In addition to his beloved wife Rosalie of 40 years and his loving mother Barbara, he is also survived by his devoted daughters, Michelle M. MacCaffrie of Norton, and twins Shauna R. Goodwin and her husband Greg of Cambridge and Heather H. MacCaffrie of Long Island, N.Y. He was the dear brother of Kevin T. MacCaffrie and his wife Mary of Bristol, N.H., and is also survived by many special nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. His funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 9 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 330 Pratt St. (Route 106), Mansfield. Military honors performed by the U.S. Navy will be held at the conclusion of services at St. Mary's Church. Burial will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 11 a.m. in the Holy Rosary Cemetery, Richmond, Vt. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 21 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield. Christine Medeiros, 64 MANSFIELD - Christine Eve Medeiros of Mansfield, formerly of Foxboro, died unexpectedly early Monday morning, Oct. 19, 2009 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was born Jan. 11, 1945 in Attleboro, the daughter of the late Eugene L. and Lillian (Hale) Davison. She graduated from Foxboro High School, Class of 1963. She was a waitress at the Red Wing Diner in Walpole, retiring in 2002. Christine was an avid reader, movie buff, loved playing cards, dancing and doing crossword puzzles. She was the wife of the late Arthur L. Brown Sr., who was killed in combat in Vietnam in 1969, and the former wife of Robert (Goose) Medeiros of Mansfield. She is survived by her children, Arthur L. Brown Jr. of Oklahoma, Corey R. Medeiros of Mansfield, and Caitlin H. Medeiros of Mansfield. She was the sister of Jean Elliott of Foxboro, Mary Burhart of Wrentham, Judy and her husband James Pettengill of Foxboro, Larry and his wife Elizabeth Davison of Foxboro, and best friends Sherry Lander and Josie Hopkins of Mansfield. Christine is pre-deceased by her sisters Shirley Brabant, Joan Seltsam and her brother Frederick Davison. She is the grandmother of eight: Creighton, Morgan, Brianna, Talon, Autumn, Brody, Braidan and Spencer. Beatrice Connelly, 84 NORTH ATTLEBORO - Beatrice Elizabeth (Fuller) Connelly, 84, formerly of 81 North Ave., Attleboro Falls, died peacefully Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009 in Cape Cod Hospital. She was the beloved wife of the late James W. Connelly Jr., to whom she was married for 54 years. Born in Attleboro on April 16, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Angelina (Clarkin) Fuller. She was raised and educated in Attleboro and graduated from Attleboro High School and then from Burdett College in Boston. After graduating, she was employed as a medical secretary at Jane Brown and Sturdy Memorial Hospital. She then pursued a career in advertising, and was employed by Lyons, and Stebbings & Associates advertising firms. A lifelong Attleboro Falls resident, Betty and Bill retired to Brewster, Mass. in 1994. Betty was an accomplished artist and was a proud member of the Cape Cod Art Association as well as the Nauset Painters Guild and The East Wind Gallery. An avid golfer, Betty was a member of the Captain's Course Ladies Golf League. She was also a member of the Mayflower Society. She was the brother of John Fuller of West Barnstable and the sister of the late Virginia Johnson of New Hampshire. Betty is survived by her three much-loved children: Kathleen (Connelly) and Maurice Ouimet of Orwell, Vt., Gaile (Connelly) and Stephan Fish of Eastham, Mass., and James Connelly III and his wife Ellen of Attleboro Falls. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren: Maurice, James, Adriana Ouimet, Joseph Fish, Natalie Jette, James, Samuel and Emma Connelly, and her eight great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 9:30 a.m. from the John J. Diamond Funeral Home, 180 North Washington St., North Attleboro, followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mark's Church, 105 Stanley St., Attleboro Falls. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Attleboro Falls.
