Local obituaries were published on Wednesday, Nov. 4 for: John McMann Jr., 68, of Norton; Shirley Barker, 57, of Pawtucket; and Omer Landry, 68, of Wolfeboro, N.H.

John William McMann Jr., 68

NORTON - John William McMann Jr. passed away Monday, Sept. 21, 2009 at the age of 68 from lung cancer.

John was born Jan. 4, 1941 in Amesbury, Mass. to John William McMann and Doris McMann (Marian). John's childhood roots were established in the coastal community of Small Point in Phippsburg, Maine, where he enjoyed fishing and lobstering as a trade as well as bird hunting in the fall.

He graduated from Morse High School in 1959 and took college courses in Boston to prepare himself in the profession of an architect. He moved to Norton, Mass. permanently with his wife Judith McMann (Coulthard) in 1968, and worked in the architectural field.

John also served honorably for a brief period of time as a Norton police officer. He was well-known in the local Produce Barn and other shops in the Norton area.

John leaves behind three sons: John, Robert and James.

A remembrance service will be held Saturday, Nov. 7 at 11:30 a.m. in the Small Point Baptist Church in Phippsburg, Maine. Following the service, we will be serving food and refreshments and share in our memories of John. His request was to have his ashes spread off the coast of Bald Head a few miles away from where the service will take place.

Shirley Ann Barker, 57

PAWTUCKET - Shirley Ann Barker, 57, of Pawtucket died Friday, Oct. 16, 2009 at her home. She was the wife of Kevin Barker.

Born in Attleboro, Mass., a daughter of Ann Bilsborough Nisil and Edward T. Rockett of Carver, Mass., she was raised and educated in North Attleboro and had been employed as a certified nursing assistant at the Madonna Manor in North Attleboro, Mass. for 30 years.

She was devoted to her family and grandchildren.

She was a Pawtucket resident for the past 25 years. Survivors besides her parents and husband are a son, Kevin T. Barker of Pawtucket; a daughter, Shannon Marie Alves of Florida; a brother, Edward Rockett of Pawtucket; four sisters: Barbara Dowdall and Pamela Rice, both of Attleboro, Brenda Haley of Pawtucket and Melissa Jacques of Central Falls; and four grandchildren.

A private funeral was held at the convenience of the family.

Omer Philip Landry

WOLFEBORO, N.H. - Omer Philip Landry, a lifetime educator and a high school basketball coach who led the smallest school in Rhode Island to a championship, died in Wolfeboro, N.H., on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009.

He was born Sept. 27, 1941 in Pawtucket, R.I., to Omer and Margaret Landry of Central Falls, R.I.

He was married to Rosemary Kiernan of Lincoln, R.I., on June 26, 1965 in Pawtucket, R.I.

Mr. Landry graduated from Saint Raphael Academy in Pawtucket in 1959. He graduated from Providence College in 1963 with a degree in political science.

He later earned a master's degree in education. Mr. Landry played on the Providence College basketball team for one year. His college career was cut short by injury.

Mr. Landry was appointed head basketball coach of Sacred Heart Academy in Central Falls in 1966 at 24 years old. He was also head coach of the track team and taught world history, law and sociology.

After Sacred Heart closed its doors in 1970, Mr. Landry coached basketball and taught at Mount Saint Charles Academy in Woonsocket, R.I., and then Cranston High School West. Mr. Landry remained at Cranston West, teaching history, until he retired in 2000.

Mr. Landry served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.

He is survived by his former wife, Rosemary Kiernan Landry of Meredith, N.H.; two sons, Kevin, of North Falmouth, Mass. and Christopher, of Sarasota, Fla.; and one daughter, Jennifer of Bethel, Maine; three sisters, Mary Mercier of West Yarmouth, Mass., Paula O'Reilly of Cumberland, and Barbara Triassi of Pawtucket; one brother, John Landry of Mayfield Village, Ohio; and grandchildren: Jack, Addison, Nicholas, Will, Samantha, Joey, Sophie, Emme, Julia, Alexis and Corliss.

He is predeceased by his other brother, David Landry.

His funeral will be held on Friday, Nov. 6 at 8:30 a.m. from the Lincoln Funeral Home, 1501 Lonsdale Ave., Lincoln, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Consolation Church, Broadway, Pawtucket. Burial will be in Mt. St. Mary's Cemetery, Pawtucket.
